i'll scatter the ashes, no need for the choir
He had been preymaster for just about five moons, and as time dragged on, so did the nights. Days were filled with organizing hunting parties, even during the travel, in order to keep the Tribe fed and the urgency didn't leave with them settling down. If anything, it had increased; the territory was still new, still not fully discovered and explored and still dangerous.

If he was going to take out a hunting patrol, it would be with his best cats, ones he knew could get the job done while also staying safe. He'd take one out another time, for a bigger hunt, in the ridges, but for now, he'd stick to the forest. And forest combined with his best cats meant one thing - he needed Butterfly Flutters At Dawn, his best tracker, a great combination with him and his speed - which also meant that he needed Star. Which, if he thought about, wasn't a horrible thing, but the last five moons he'd been participating in the majority of the patrols he sent out, aside from one or two, and he often avoided asking Star to come with the group. It wasn't that he disliked his brother, no, he missed the companionship that they once had. But time had changed them, distanced them, and he had more important things to worry about than settling the rift between them. Perhaps one day.

Alas, it wouldn't impact his decision in any ways, and he made his way over to the two, calling for his brother and brushing his tail in Butterfly's gaze to signal her to join them. Who would he pick for his other sentry? He wasn't in charge of training them so he wasn't sure who the best option was. However, he trusted Wolf to keep his cats in tiptop shape. His gaze flitted over Glow of Midnight Firefly and he figured he had no reason to pick another. After calling the sentry over, he made his way over the entrance - only just remembering where it was.

"
We'll be headed to the Alpine Ridge today. The territory is still new, I've chosen you for your specific skill sets - you're our best tracker, Butterfly, and I've no doubt you'll protect her, Star. Firefly, I trust you'll watch over me." He kept his face angled towards Butterfly as he spoke, slow and deliberate; he knew Star would easily translate, but there was no reason he couldn't do it himself. He didn't say much more, instead turning and walking out of the entrance and towards the Ridge. "Let's stay safe today."

[attr="class","bandittext"]Star had spent much of the morning lounging, as he often did when duty did not call him. His soft, rounded features were such a contradiction to the hard exterior of a fighter that laid beneath. He was strong, certainly not the best that existed, but he took his duty seriously and the only thing that would prevent him from doing his job was his own death. He was dedicated to protecting the cats of the tribe. So when Butterfly became a scout and needed a more permanent guard for any hunting patrols, he'd been quick to jump at the opportunity, despite knowing how much of a strain there was on Dragonfly's relationship with her sister. His intention, after all, had not been to hurt her. In fact, he'd been hoping that it would only bring them closer together, knowing that he was responsible for keeping her estranged sister alive. After all, it didn't seem likely that they could truly hate each other that much.

Maybe it was just wishful thinking, but that didn't matter. Star's decision to step forward had been genuine and despite the rift that settled between the siblings moons ago, he'd stand by both of them, if they'd allow it.

Burn's appearance was sudden, but he'd taken to lounging beside Butterfly this morning, allowing the warmth of the new sun to soak into his soft, fuzzy pelt. He liked Butterfly's company because it required little thought. He didn't have to fill the air with his voice, and they had always seemed to settle into a comfortable silence. They communicated when they needed to, through nods, miming, and tail gestures and that was enough for him. At the mention of a hunt, and the fact that Butterfly would be going alone, he nodded and rose to his paws, stretching out his short, stout body. He shivered as his muscles hyperextended before sighing and turning his gaze toward their fourth member. While he'd never necessarily had a problem with Firefly, he'd always known the tom to be a little erratic, so he tended to keep his distance when possible.

"Of course, Burn." He said quickly, with a respectful nod of his head.

Turning his gaze to Butterfly, he tilted his head in a quizzical look, as if to ask if she needed clarification on what they were being asked to do. He assumed that she'd know, since Burn was the Preymaster, after all. But he wouldn't leave her high and dry if she needed his assistance.

BUTTERFLY

Star was pleasant company, truly. He did not try as much as others to dance around her disability, nor did he seem to ever forget it and go talking a mile a minute like the chattier felines of their tribe. It was pleasant, to have someone that simply understood she did not need them to force anything, that she did not want to be a burden. Or perhaps she was reading him wrong...yet all the same, he kept her feeling safe, and she had no doubt in her mind that he genuinely just wanted to help her. She knew he had eyes for her sister - and their relationship was...well, tentative, at best. However, she trusted Star all the same, with her and with Dragonfly. Perhaps he could give her sister the love and trust Butterfly struggled to find again. That would be enough.

With the sun dappling her pale fur and the fluffy tom settled by her side as he often was, with just enough contact between them to alert her to any sudden movements if something were to happen, Butterfly had allowed herself to doze off for a moment. It was a light sleep - she had not slept deeply since she was just a young to-be, in all honesty - but it was enough to show that she felt safe here with her Tribe, even if their lands were not quite so familiar and their situation not nearly as settled as it used to be.

Times truly were strange...but then again, who was she to judge.

At the movement of Star by her side, his fuzzy golden fur brushing against her spine as he moved, the molly opened her eyes and lifted her head. He was often careful not to alarm her when it was not needed, so she already figured it was simply something within the tribe that drew his attention. Burn, their new Preymaster. With a quick blink at the way the tom waved his tail, the molly was swift to roll onto her stomach and get to her paws, remaining ear flicking out of habit as she stretched and padded toward him. Where perhaps once she may have tended to try and hide her scarred face from view, now everyone was used to it, and duty sought she keep her eyes on those who might need them for her attention.

Burn was not one to defer his instructions for Star to communicate, after all. He seemed to prefer treating her more equally than that...it warmed her, slightly, made that constant sourceless ache dull a little when he treated her like any valued scout rather than a dependent, half-able molly. He was certainly a Preymaster who's spirit Butterfly could appreciate.

Not a word to pass her lips, bright blue eyes focused intently upon the movement of the tom's words, the way he kept them angled specifically toward her, before offering a blink of acceptance and a dip of her head in understanding. Star was already by her side again, and as he tilted his head in question, she took the opportunity to skip meeting her brother's gaze and offer her guide a slight smile and minute shake of her head to show she needed no more assistance.

Burn was already off the moment his instructions were relayed and understood, efficient as ever, and Butterfly caught up a couple strides from his head start before falling in at the tom's pace. She remembered being raised alongside the tom to the very same moon, and while her mother rarely allowed her to interact with many beyond herself and specifically chosen others, she had not been surprised to see him given the role of Preymaster. Even so new to the position...she hardly ever saw a glimmer of hesitation in his fiery eyes. It was almost as mysterious as the mark upon his shoulder.

Truly...Butterfly wished she had that kind of determination.

----- FIREFLY -----
Firefly stole every opportunity to monitor the new lands during the night watches, if he could. The silence was amicable, his head more clear, and that distracting chatter so common in daylight dissipated into faint memory. Without the bothersome presence of unwanted companionship, Firefly felt more relaxed. He didn't have to defend against the gentle caress of night, didn't have to spit words like venom to keep it well away.

This preference has had him taking siesta at daybreak and sleeping in well past sunrise, drowsily stumbling out of his cave just as the rays dipped beyond the mountain's tip. But unfortunately for Firefly, this day in particular had other plans.

A nightmare had jostled him out of his usual dreamless slumber, a familiar scene still crisp and vivid even after so many moons had passed. His one, single mistake, twisted grotesquely in honor of those old, gnarled emotions, still pecking at the edges of his waking mind. The haze of half-conscious, blood-soaked memory flooded his nose and left him gasping, eyes shooting open, the lazy afternoon sunlight whitening his vision for a few long, vulnerable moments.

He came to himself after that, forcing his breath into a regular pattern and sitting up from his nest. Arching his shoulders into his usual hunched, intimidating posture, Firefly blinked away his drowsiness, knowing well he would not be able to return to sleep now, and stepped into the clearing. Absolutely no weakness. He had to rid himself of these ghosts, and the only way he had discovered to do so...was feigning ignorance. Brows furrowed, pawsteps weighty, Firefly adopted his best prickly exterior and shook himself off.

Too early. He was tired, his eyes dry. But the Preymaster's eyes strayed to his corner and waved him over, and so his day had to begin.

Ah, Butterfly and Pudgeface...they seemed to be coming along. His gaze weighed heavily on his sister, but she blatantly ignored him; the message was clear, as always, but that didn't mean Firefly couldn't be petty about it.

"Lead the way," he replied, turning away from Butterfly to ensure she could not translate his words. With a scathing look towards Pudgeface, Firefly stalked close behind Burn, a silent, matte figure too sleepy to provide any more preamble. There were things he wanted to say, but his tongue weighed heavily in his mouth, and truly, his low reserves of energy were better spent staying vigilant...even if the other half of this party made his teeth itch from their mere proximity alone. He made sure to stay away as far as possible to them, flanking Burn on his other side. At least one individual held his respect here.

i'll scatter the ashes, no need for the choir
They started their trek, if it could be called that, to the Alpine Ridge, and Burn was pleased to see them spread out and take to their positions without needing to be told, even if it was a bit tension filled. He wasn't dumb, nor was he oblivious - already it was apparent there were some annoyances filling the air, bordering the line of hostility even, but they were Tribe first and foremost and he trusted that they could get along for the sake of feeding the Tribe. And if not, then he was mistaken and it was one that would not be made again, he was sure of it.

Flanked on either side, Burn led the group through the mountains, keeping a steady pace. It wasn't a pace he was quite familiar with yet - back at their own home, he'd push them much faster, his patrols gliding over the rocky terrain like one giant bird. But there were crevices that were unnoticed, dips and edges that weren't fully explored and mapped out even to himself. He wouldn't put them in danger for the sake of speed, not when it wasn't needed. Burn focused on the path ahead of them, one paw in front of the other. If danger arose, there was no doubt in his mind that the sentries would catch it before it could do them harm.

Not a word was spoken from him until the Ridge was in sight. Slowing, he paused at the edge of the tree line, scanning what he could see before he turned his head to address his Tribemates, once more angling his face so that Butterfly wouldn't have an issue seeing, though his eyes drifted over each of them. "
We'll go slow - I know it's been a few moons, but the forest hadn't been fully explored and I'd rather not have to drag one of us back instead of prey." Other than birdsong, there wasn't much he could hear immediately and he wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. He hated not knowing.

"
Butterfly," he started, pulling his gaze back to her, "let us know if you find a trail. I'll be searching too, of course. Star, Firefly, keep an eye out. We don't know what predators we're working with here." With that, he twisted his head back around and started for the forest, flicking his tail again for the others to follow.
