and i don't want the world to see me
because i don' think that they'd understand
[attr="class","bandittext"]Marked by the new moon, there was a night where the entire band gathered together. The huntresses sat at the outskirts of the circle, looking on in horror as their kits and mates were pitted against each other and thrown into the sparring ring by Bird. The losers died, regardless of the condition they were left in by their opponent, so often it was more merciful to deal the killing blow themselves than watch Bird do it as he stood over young and old, making an example out of the weakest ones. It lasted until sunlight licked over the land, washing the center of camp crimson with the blood that had been spilled.

And while she tried her best to forget those traditions, blocking them into the furthest recesses of her mind, she'd awakened to the haunting smell of iron that accompanied blood and screaming in her ears.

Bolting upright from her corner in the healing den, her breathing so fast and heavy that she nearly caused herself to get sick, she realized it was silent. The dead of night. No light entered the den, and as she stepped out into the moonless night, she blinked multiple times to try to get her eyes to adjust to the dim light provided by the stars above. Her breathing came out in quick gasps and before long her stomach heaved due to the gulping of air that she was trying to force into her lungs. She walked as fast as she could to the lake, unaware of the watchful eyes that followed her as she left camp. The scrawny feline gasped for air as she approached the frigid water, her entire body felt like it was crawling with ants. Her paws felt heavy and the fur felt like it was matted and stained with the blood of many, many moons of far too many fights. And without hesitation, the second she saw that frigid water, despite how much of a shock it'd be to her system, she threw herself in.

The waves were difficult for her to manuever, especially with the wounds that hadn't healed, but she felt unclean. She needed the sensation of ants and smell of blood to stop filling her senses. She'd been so focused on the sensations and the smells and the desperation to cleanse herself that she hadn't heard the howls of the cat that had followed her all the way from camp. She'd barely noticed when they dove in after her.

In her desperate state, when her head dipped under water for more than a few seconds, she barely noticed until she was coughing and spitting out the freezing water. Her body was shaking, determined to fight against the cold, but the teeth of another dug sharply into the fur at the back of her neck and she was hauled from the water and dropped unceremoniously onto the shore. Her breathing was now just soft choking sobs, though no tears came with it. The water had helped soothe the crawling sensation and her nose being filled with water had calmed the metallic scent that had consumed her memory.

The tiny calico turned her gaze upward toward the tom that stood before her, the one who'd saved her from drowning herself, not that Flutter had even realized that had been a possibility. Slowly, she shoved herself to her haunches and began licking at the pads of her paws, repeatedly while addressing the tom. Unclean.

"W-w-why did you d-d-do that?"

While the she-cat usually stammered through most conversations, it was made worse by the chattering of her teeth. Now that her pelt was soaked and sleek against her body, it showed the scrawny body underneath where each rib was finely outlined, showing just how malnourished she was.

----- FIREFLY -----

In the beginning, the moonless night was like no other; Firefly sat vigil at the entrance of the camp, the only substantial indication of his presence the glow of his eyes against his matte black coat. He remained deathly still, only wind stirring his fur. He watched quietly the beyond space, ever alert, ever coiled and ready to spring. Despite the frigid stone on his paw pads, Firefly dare not shift an inch; few things could break his vigilant concentration, and mere discomfort could not be one of them.

His ear swiveled to catch the sound of choking from within the clearing, slightly alarmed at the suddenness of it, so deep was the silence before. Eyes flitting to the entrance, he tracked the path of the molly that emerged, almost laughably perturbed and frantic to leave whatever had agitated her behind. "Bloody Star Tribe," Firefly muttered sourly, lip curling. He was not worried for Flutter's wellbeing - of course not. But if he let her wander off the face of the mountain in that state, the blood would certainly be on his paws. Rolling his eyes, he slowly pulled to his feet, stalking after the tiny disappearing shape along the ridge on silent paws.

The other sentry on duty could handle watching the entrance. And if they couldn't, there would be words tomorrow. At least, that was what Firefly mumbled under his breath, quickening his pace to catch up to Flutter's frantic rush. He recognized this path very well; she aimed towards the lake, it seemed, and so supposedly would not be dropping off a cliff edge anytime soon. Still, the streak of fear-scent set Firefly's teeth on edge. He knew very well what some nightmares could inflict on one's conscience, and finally, the faint echo of concern took hold in his chest, sharpening his expression.

Finally, the rock gave way to a broad expanse of water dipped in midnight stars. Here Firefly caught sight again of Flutter, who appeared to be asphyxiating dangerously near to the edge. The first time Firefly had hesitated, it cost him his peace of mind as well as his family - he would never hesitate again.

"Get back!" he called, blood rushing to his skull as his strides lengthened into an uneven sprint, trying to catch Flutter before she fell into the unforgiving depths. She didn't seem to hear him.

Skidding to a stop at the shoreline, he scanned the surface of the water for any sign of return, expression cold as ever but tinted with an uncharacteristic flush of panic. Internally, he groaned. He hated getting wet. It soaked into his thick coat, made it grossly heavy and stinking of fish. Taking only a moment to express his utter reluctance at the sky, he dove in, large paws propelling him through the clear water despite his heavy fur. Biting down fiercely on Flutter's scruff and raking upward, he broke the surface not a tick too soon and threw the soaking pile of bones onto dry ground before pulling his own body out of the freezing depths.

Watching his rescue sputter and choke in distaste, Firefly loomed, dripping, over the tiny calico, waiting for her to finish nearly drowning before beginning his scathing retort.

"Are you stupid?" he accused, tail lashing behind him. The fur plastered against her side outlined her ribs rather pathetically, making him think rather less of her. Second order of business would be retrieving something for her to eat, good stars. "Please. Do you think I would sit here and watch you drown? Think about what you're jumping into next time, birdbrain."

and i don't want the world to see me
because i don' think that they'd understand
[attr="class","bandittext"]Due to her panicked state, the scrawny feline hadn’t noticed the shadow that followed her from camp. She hadn’t heard his yowl to get back from the water’s edge. And she barely even recognized that he was the one to pull her from the depths and prevent her drowning only moments before.

In fact, she almost hadn’t realized he’d saved her at all until he hauled her out of the frigid water and dumped her to the ground at his paws. The water spewed from her maw as she coughed and gagged, the trembling starting almost immediately from the cool new-leaf air coupled with the frigid water she’d just plunged into. Still, as she shook, her paw shivering as she tried to lick the pad, diligent brown eyes locked on his. Her mind was only on the cleaning of the sensation on her paws, the sensation that had made her throw herself into the water in the first place.

As his tail lashed behind him and he spat out his accusation, however, her demeanor changed once more. She was known for being timid in camp, and as he turned his anger onto her, Flutter shrank back, tucking her paws up underneath her. She didn’t speak at first, her bottom lip trembling though it was difficult to tell if it was due to fear or to the cold that had her teeth chattering. “N-no.” She said softly, her eyes quickly darting downward and away from his. “I-I… I..

Stammering, Flutter closed her eyes tightly, swallowing hard against the bile that started in the back of her throat. “I… needed t-t-to get clean.

Not that he’d understand. In her mind, her paws had been stained crimson with blood, and the only thing that seemed to make her feel like she’d be able to wash away those sins was the black depths of the water that lapped behind him. The lake had been cold, shocked her senses. And while she didn’t feel cleansed, she could see where she was now. Her mind wasn’t clouded with the memory of the place that she’d left.

Backing slowly away from the tom, she put several fox-lengths between them before slowly lifting her other paw from the ground, returning to licking at it, between the toes, the paw pad, several times. It’d likely be raw if she didn’t stop soon, but she paid that possibility no mind. Based on the healing wounds that covered her face, neck, and stomach, as well as the deep scars on her shoulders and flanks from moons of fighting, sore pads were nothing. “I didn’t.Lick. Lick.Need.Lick. Lick. Lick.To be saved.” She lowered that paw and returned to the other. Death wasn’t something to fear, she’d been ready to embrace it since she lost her kits. The tribe had saved her from the wounds she bore, but not from the haunting memories that plagued her existence. If anything, she ached to join them. But until then, she’d do what she could to repay the tribe for their kindness.

Firefly's glare only grew more accusatory as Flutter stuttered through her response. She really did seem like a colossal idiot; dunking herself in the water would only make her susceptible to illness, and then what good was she? He remembered the day a patrol of sentries dragged her into camp, a pathetic, blundering pile of infected wounds and matted, bloody fur. Perhaps she had a death wish, though Firefly could hardly imagine why.

He'd assumed she had been attacked by some sort of mountain beast those sunrises ago, but maybe he was wrong. Flutter was acting...suspicious. What kind of nightmare could she possibly have had?

"W-wait, what are you blabbering about now?" he snapped, his face contorting with offense and confusion. He took a domineering step forward to stop her from retreating, but something told him that perhaps demanding she stay still would be like trying to corner a squirrel...or one of his sisters. Shaking himself and sending droplets every which way, Firefly stubbornly sat where he was and set to work grooming the lake water out of his own fur.

He watched Flutter scrub her paw pads between combing the fur on his shoulder opposite to dry faster. How ungrateful. He follows her all this way, soaking himself to the bone to drag her away from a watery death, and she says she didn't need saving? Please.

"Unfortunately for you, it's my job to save you," he grumbled between strokes. "You're part of the tribe now, so stop causing trouble for it, stars."

Pausing for a moment to turn his glare on Flutter, Firefly raked his tongue between his teeth and turned his ears backward. He almost said something else, but bit it back and turned away again.
