VRIESIEAPAW

Pfft so subtle

The merge had made things...interesting, one could say. Not that Vrieseapaw had ever really known any different, having been far younger than she was now before the merge. However, the difference was still obvious in ways. How cats would glare or tiptoe around each other, how awkward conversations would force themselves to ensue, how grown warriors could get lost leading their own apprentices...it all felt a little unnatural. Yet what was most odd was how the scents never seemed to quite meld together. Sure, it had not been long...but even Vrieseapaw could sense the division at her young age, could identify the lands they were once stronger in by the borders she had toured. She wanted to visit those lands...but more importantly, Vrieseapaw wanted to figure out what made them all so different.

From her perspective, and perhaps it was the naivety of youth speaking, but no one in Oneclan really seemed as different as they seemed to think they were. They all just seemed like cats to her, really, and the tensions between them seemed a little more exaggerated than she figured they had right to be. However, she could certainly admit that some of them were different. It was those more obvious independencies that drew her attention, truly. No the exaggerations or the scents, but the strange behaviors that cropped up here and there.

To see a cat afraid of its own shadow was...well, it certainly drew Vrisea's curiosity. Sure, she was expected to be meek and gentle and obedient...but even she was not expected to be so ridiculously skittish. Vrieseapaw hardly even knew what she looked like! Certainly she had never seen the tiny ghost of a she-cat enter the apprentice den, in which she was supposed to sleep. One would think a cat that timid would be more fearful of what might eat them out there, than what cats might say in camp.

Apparently the strange apprentice still stayed out in the territory all the same though. Vrieseapaw had tried to catch sight of her, but the only time she ever spotted the tiny she was when she dropped off prey hiding behind her mentor and then left right after. Weird, but even Vrieseapaw could pity her for it. Something bad must have happened to make her that scared, right? Apparently she was even afraid of her own brothers, something Vrieseapaw could never imagine. Valerian was a bit of a wimp too but he was never afraid of her and Verbena. He was scared of Talonflight though...but Vrieseapaw did not care about that, she hardly cared for the tom anyway.

This time though, Vrieseapaw was close. She had managed to find a trail of the little she's scent after she had dropped off some prey earlier, and even though she was really not much of a tracker, she did her best all the same to follow it. Curiosity was certainly a good drive, and Vrieseapaw was not afraid to be out in the territory by herself. She would just have to not get caught again - that huge tom sure was not too receiving of it last time. How he could train such a skittish cat was honestly beyond her.

As the scent grew stronger, Vrieseapaw paused, glancing around. There was certainly no sign of the other cat, but there was...eyes locking onto a low lying bush, definitely a good hiding place for a rabbit - or indeed a small cat - Vrieseapaw stalked closer to it before lowering herself to peer underneath. A slight proud laugh burst out from the apprentice as soon as she spotted the pale pelt, and she ignored the mud she lay in as she grinned at the other feline. "Hey, I found you! You're the ghost right, Omake or something?"

She didn't like the big clan idea. Some cats did, others despised it, and the rest seemed to be just neutral about it. Omega didn't quite know where she fell in the categories because while she certainly didn't enjoy so many more cats crowding her space, she also didn't have the history that those who hated this merge did. Maybe she could be considered more neutral? Any fights started weren't because of her - avoiding others in the first place helped with that - and arguments were definitely not her thing.

Her thing was watching the birds for most of the day until Hornetcall needed her. Luckily, being young, she didn't have to unlearn anything from Moorclan's teachings. Unluckily, being so small, she didn't have the strength to attack most of the larger prey and she flat out refused to hunt any of the pretty birds she watched. That usually only left mice and squirrels for her to catch or the long boring wait for fish.

As such, Omega found herself with absolutely no one her own age to be around. It didn't bother her as much as some might think. She was already used to being on her own thanks to Alpha and his need to take the attention of anyone she might become close to. It did mean, however, that she missed a lot of the social cues of her fellow apprentices and realize that the attention from one she-cat in particularly didn't automatically mean she was out to be mean to Omega.

Leading to the situation she found herself in now, staring wide-eyed at the face shoved into her current hiding spot. Omega scrambled out of the bush and put firm distance between them, ears turned back in uncertainty. There was a beat of silence as she struggled to remember what she was asked and figure out if she needed to answer or not. Her name, she was trying to figure out her name, she should answer, the other apprentice had said it wrong - "Omega," she corrected quietly. She blinked over the she-cat but couldn't put a name to her face. The most she could figure out was that she had to have been from Gorgeclan. They had a lot of tabbies, she certainly wasn't from Moorclan, and she didn't have the sleek look of most Creekclan cats. Of course, she could be wrong.

NOTES

Whoops. Vrieseapaw's eyes widened in surprise as the tiny feline darted out of the bush she was hiding under and scurried away from her without so much as a squeak, before she flicked her own fluffy tail at her flank in self scolding. Idiot, the cat was known for being scaredy. of course she would run off being surprised like that. "Stupid Vriesea..." she whispered to herself, before peeking over her shoulder, hoping she had not missed her chance to speak with the ghostly cat, but not wanting to make the same mistake twice by whipping around to check.

Good, well at least she was still here. Though Vrieseapaw figured now it was probably more for fear that the larger - though younger, the calico noted with surprise - apprentice might try and chase her down. Which...well maybe that was not entirely incorrect, considering she had intentionally tracked her in the first place. But it was not like she wanted to hurt her! What made the snowy apprentice so skittish anyway? Maybe she had not been in the clans for long...she sure did not have a clan name that was certain.

That only made her that much more interesting though.

"Oh, sorry, guess I got it wrong," the apprentice offered, mind rattling over what Berrychirp had said to do when a kit was scared of her. Not that this was a kit, but she figured the circumstance was not that different, right? Okay, be small, she could do that...kind of. Rather than getting up, Vireseapaw stayed lying where she was, ignoring the mud as she tucked her paws under herself and blinked over at the other she-cat. She felt kind of silly, to be honest, but maybe it would make Omega feel safer, and then she could get the answers to some of her questions? Like sitting idly on a bank waiting for fish - the outcome was worth it, even if it felt like a silly waste of time.

"I'm Vrieseapaw, by the way. You probably didn't know that, well...since you don't really talk to anyone, but that's fine." Flicking her tail idly - though perhaps that was a bad thing to let happen, would Omega be scared of that too? Really this weird cat had her second guessing every breath almost, how weird. "How come you don't have a clan name anyway? Are you not actually an apprentice?"

This was. This was weird. So weird. Definitely, already not how she expected absolutely any confrontation to go between her and one of the other apprentices. Unless it was a trick? Alpha certainly didn't have the patience for anything like the friendly conversation the she-cat was offering. Could it really be considered friendly?

Well. She hadn't been outwardly bullied so. There was that.

And she apologized? For... getting her name wrong? Omega really didn't know what to make of what was going on but she desperately hoped it wasn't going to backfire later. Subconsciously, her body began to relax from its tense readiness to dart away again when... Vrieseapaw made no move to get up. Or really face her. So at least she had a chance of escaping before an attack. Also, what? Her name was weird. The little she-cat silently mouthed the name a few times and stumbled with every try before tuning back in.

Oh. Questions. More questions. Uncomfortable questions.

There was absolutely no sign that she took offense to Vrieseapaw asking if she was even a real apprentice. It was... It was a fair question. She didn't really. Act. Like the other apprentices and she knew she was rarely seen away from Hornetcall anyway. So. "I - um. I am. Although difficult, she spoke even softer than before, awkwardly shifting on her paws and steadfast in keeping her gaze firmly averted from the other. No need to make even the possibility of her challenging Vireseapaw appear. Though the little bit of pride and stubbornness that crept in next surprised even her for a moment. "My mother named me Omega. That's my name. I don't need a clan one."

All at once the slight bit of bravado she had fled and she shrunk a couple steps back anyway. Stupid, stupid, she berated herself. Don't be proud. Don't tell them that your name means something to you. Desperate for the conversation to end, Omega scrambled through her thoughts to try to find something that would let her leave. "What - um. What do you - do you want?"

NOTES

Well she seemed...a little more relaxed? Vrieseapaw honestly was not sure she could really call it that. She still looked like she was afraid Vriesea might try to eat her or something, which was absurd, but at least she was not bolting off again. Vrieseapaw took it to be a success, kind of, but not so much as one where she could risk getting up lest the tiny molly got all scared again.

She spoke! Thoughts of trying not to scare the other cat dismissed again, Vrieseapaw blinked in surprise as the little molly not only confirmed her status as an apprentice, but went on to offer a full, stutter free sentence. Albeit, still a quiet one, but there was even a hint of pride to it, a little bit of stubbornness that saw the calico's eyes shine with fascination. Did she miss her ma too? Was her name her way of holding her close? Various theories invaded the apprentice's mind, but she figured they were better something left unasked for now. Omega seemed...uneasy, about her questions.

"That's cool, I didn't know clan cats could have different names," the molly mused, thinking it over for a moment. "You can call me Vriesea if you like. I won't be a 'paw forever anyway so you don't need to worry about that." Vriesea...yeah, she liked it to be honest. She loved her name, with or without the clan status. To remove the ranking of paw made her feel a little more mature, less like an underling than she did with her full clan name. Still, she knew that once she got her warrior name she was bound to cherish it a lot. After all...it would be for all her accomplishments, and she was determined to make those many.

The smaller feline was already backing away again. It was like she knew when Vrieseapaw was even slightly distracted! If it were her brother, the apprentice would be up in a blur and a flurry of paws, tackling her brother down or playfully blocking his path. Here, though, Vriesea figured that would not be a very good idea. So, she forced herself to stay put, gaze following the other feline as she tried to quell her frustration at being avoided.

"I just wanna talk, nothing bad. You're always hiding, we're supposed to be denmates ya know." With the discomfort of the mud seeping into her tummy fur, Vrieseapaw finally gave in to taking the potential risk of sitting up. Though she tried to halt any worry Omega might feel at the action by promptly setting about focusing on removing the mud from her snowy underbelly. After a few rasps of her tongue and a twitch of her muzzle in distaste, the apprentice peeked over to Omega again curiously. "Don't you want friends? Its gotta be terribly boring without any."
