This was a mistake.

She had made such a big mistake, and now there was blood everywhere and she had been barely able to think through the panic and pain to shove herself under the roots of a nearby tree. All she had wanted was something to eat, that was it, that's all she wanted before she found a place to hide out for the rest of the day's light. The mouse had been so tempting in the little break of the trees and she was hungry after training most of the day with Hornetcall. She hadn't even thought to look and make sure nothing was around and ready to swoop on the same prey as her.

Her successful pounce on the mouse was immediately ruined by talons digging into her side from a hawk. It seemed just as startled as she was and thankfully chose to take off with her prize instead of her the second she bit it in terror. Omega shivered and winced as she frantically licked her side to clear away the red staining her light coat and see how much damage was done. She didn't dare think about making a move back to camp - Skywhisper and Lilypaw were so nice, she would have tried if it meant them caring for her, but they had been moved to quarantine and she didn't want to risk getting sick. Flickerfrost was intimidating and Spiderfrost reminded her too much of Alpha for her to be comfortable with either. Featherpaw was never seen without either so she was out, and honestly anyone who spent that much time around the older medicine cat had to be just as bad.

Omega hissed as she switched sides to check on her left. The right hadn't been as bad as she feared but it hurt it hurt so much even if she was safe through the night she would have to return to camp to be taken care of and the mere thought of being so vulnerable around alpha made her seriously consider just landing herself in quarantine so Skywhisper could help her.

Her stomach tightened from the over-exertion and lack of food but she tried her best to ignore it. She couldn't hunt, not now, she'd have to weather it out til tomorrow and hope there was some prey leftover.

FEATHERPAW

Careful bean <3

Horsetail sure was far more abundant here than it had been back home. Featherpaw could remember how close she used to have to travel to the Creekclan border just for a few stems, but here...in the thick of the mud and ooze of the marsh, the plant seemed to thrive. Honestly, the young healer had purred at the sight of it after slogging through the rather unwelcoming marsh, a herb to make it worth her efforts - because cat's getting infected wounds in a place like this had to be far more likely than it was in Gorgeclan anyway. It had even started to grow dark by the time Featherpaw contented herself with the generous bundle, split in two in order to have the second taken to the drop off point later.

It certainly tasted nicer than she imagined the mud caking her paws and underbelly would when she groomed it later. However, that was far from something to focus on right now. She may be older now but she was still small, and a caution that had always stuck with her since she was a tiny kit with her heathenish mother was to head home in time to avoid the night-hunting birds. Small cats were always more of a risk, after all, and the thought of being swooped up by one made Featherpaw shudder.

Still, as she padded her way home, sticking as close to cover as she could all the while, Featherpaw did not find herself in as much of a hurry as she expected. Yet it was not a sense of calm or ease that was staying her pace...no, something, somehow, felt wrong. Like when an injured cat was being rushed back to camp after a particularly nasty border fight. She could almost smell the blood of such a moment, the way its metallic tang would clog her senses and unsettle her thoughts before she could focus them in on the training Flickerfrost had all but raised her on. It was always so strong, so bitter, so...

Real? Blinking in surprise, Featherpaw stopped, eyes widening slightly as she began to question the strength of her latest imaginings. Sure, her thoughts would get carried away and sometimes she would imagine she heard or smelled something she actually could not...yet it was never so strong as it was this time. Stiffening slightly, Featherpaw set the herbs down on an exposed root and parted her maw, taking a deep breath in of the scents around her in hopes of confirming - or preferably dispelling - her suspicions.

There...coming from her left. Certainly, it was not her imagination after all.

Healer instincts kicking in before she could even think to register the cat scent that lingered alongside the blood, Featherpaw scooped up her herbs again - no doubt she would be needing them sooner than anticipated - and bounded toward the source. With single-minded focus now, she was ignoring any threats that might come from the sky above. She was fortunate, though, that whoever she sought had seemingly chosen this location for its cover all the same.

Slowing to a walk as she scent grew stronger, Featherpaw paused and set down the herbs again. Injured cats were more likely to be afraid - she knew that much from experience after all - and instinctively she found herself wanting to warn them of approach first. "Hello? Please come out if you're injured, I want to help you." Her voice was naturally soft, but it certainly had a further soothing, harmless nature when she put the effort in. It did not even occur in that moment to check if they were even one of the clan - it hardly mattered anyway, not to her. With how things were going lately...even if they were not like this, Featherpaw figured everyone deserved to be treated. Why should where they come from decide if they live anyway?

It hurt it hurt it hurt it hurt and it was all she could do to not just start crying and draw attention from the night predators that she wouldn't be able to fight off because she was so small and so useless and -

At least she was trying to keep her breathing quiet so she could hear as something started racing towards her. They slowed down and she held her breath no no no please don't be anything that wanted to eat her

It... wasn't? It had to be another cat. What cat? Who'd bother being out at this time of day on purpose unless they had a late patrol? It wasn't Alpha or Epsilon it sounded like another she-cat so that could be okay. Hopefully? She said she wanted to help her so. Maybe. Several long heartbeats passed as Omega struggled to get her paws to move through her fear. Eventually she dragged herself out from her cover, keeping one side close to the tree to hopefully not seem as injured as she actually was.

Not even a second later she was blinking widely and a touch wildly at the form of Featherpaw. She had a soft voice kinda like Skywhisper and Lilypaw so maybe - maybe she could trust her? Like she trusted her own medicine cats? Even though she was Flickerfrost's apprentice? Because. Well. She hadn't actually seen Flickerfrost be mean to other cats she just. Was scary.

What was she supposed to say to a medicine cat again? It was... It was what hurt and where, right? And. Um. How she got it. "It - um - bird. Hawk," Omega started awkwardly. She unconsciously shrank back a bit, started to go back under the tree root where she felt some form of safety and protection. "It really hurts." Her voice wobbled just as much as her frame shook under the sheer adrenaline finally leaving her system at even a hint of being in safe paws. She could just see - out of the corner of her eye - how stained and dirty her fur still was. Was again?

FEATHERPAW

NOTES

Featherpaw should not have felt an inkling of relief to hear that it was a bird that caused such wounds, not unless she was too big herself to be carried off by such a creature. However, the young healer simply could not help it. Seeing such a scared little cat, injured and all alone, in such pain...she saw herself. And when she saw such things, those which brought about memories just as painful...she could not help but shudder at the thought of how she had ever ended up in such states. To know that this little one had simply had a bad run of luck, that it was a mindless, hungry creature and not an act of pure cruelty...it was like a breath of clarity.

A breath that allowed the molly to focus her mind again upon her duty to help the poor apprentice.

Featherpaw watched as the injured youth shrunk back again, just as timid as she was only a few moons ago, and something clenched painfully in her chest. That, however, was not something for her to focus on for the moment. "I know, but it will hurt a lot worse if I don't treat it, I can make it feel better okay?"

Blinking softly at the little molly, she took two slow, gentle steps closer, giving the little one a warm and encouraging look before she directed her gaze to the wounds, assessing them as best she could from the distance she had positioned herself at. However, she did not move closer without invitation, instead leaning down to gently nudge the pile of herbs she had at her paws. Sure was lucky she had them particularly, rather than something for coughs or fevers instead.

"See this herb here?" she prompted gently, hoping to relax the little molly slightly. "Its called horsetail, and it will help your cuts heal and stop them from getting worse," she soothed, hoping that a little bit of understanding would help Omega feel a tiny bit more in control. She wished she could soothe the little one more personally, but while she held the vaguest hint of Moorclan scent, almost faded out entirely by Creekclan to the point Featherpaw could not pinpoint her origin, she did not even know the apprentice's name.

"Will you let me come closer and put it on your cuts? Or you could come over to me...but you don't have to move anywhere just yet if you don't want to."
