COVESPLASH

It was time to begin training a new generation; a new generation of young ones who will eventually rise up, obtaining the status of warrior and maybe one sunrise, laying down their lives for the sake of the clan. It was a big responsibility to ask from someone, but one that was necessary for survival. Covesplash had led his apprentice through the undergrowth, shifting through the trees and sprouting flowers. The territory was familiar to him as he had grown up in CreekClan. But, he imagined that for some; the wet paws, the slippery grounds and overflowing ponds could have been a little too much.

The tom's new assigned apprentice was one hailing from GorgeClan. The tom had heard tales that the apprentice was in fact a product of 'necessity' rather than of love. Covesplash did not question the fact nor did he have the intention to push it, but deep in his mind he found it a strange rumor, if one at all. Perhaps it was in fact true. Covesplash was not one to question a clan's tactics and beliefs, not now that they had become One.

The warrior came to a slow pace as he reached the training grounds. The training grounds were a large, spacious space. The space covered in a thick layer of green. The green was soft beneath one's paws, but was not grass but moss. The male waited for his apprentice to catch up, his tail flicking from side to side. Covesplash had trained one apprentice previously. The apprentice had been diligent in her ways, but a little clumsy. Prairieheart had been a good starter apprentice, especially as he had been young when assigned her. It begged the question; what would his new apprentice be like? Would she be anything like Prairieheart? Or perhaps a polar opposite.

VRIESIEAPAW

She's a weird child whoops

Vrieseapaw had started off the journey as quiet and obedient as was expected of her. Everyone painted the picture of her as a sickly little thing who needed careful treatment and protection, and while she hated the fact that everyone treated her like some helpless, delicate butterfly, part of her still adored receiving the attention she had missed out on from her ailing mother. It made things a little easier, really, and it made them less likely to think she would do anything wrong. After all, what sort of sweet, helpless young apprentice would ever dare to sneak off into the dangerous, unfamiliar territory all on her own?

So, she had trotted along quietly just behind her mentor and kept herself soft and quiet and obedient. That was, until all the new sights and sounds overwhelmed her and, quite frankly, she forgot the part she was meant to be playing. Vriesea simply could not help it! Everything was so new and exciting out here, and to think that she never would have even set paw in these lands had the clans not been merged together, it only made the anticipation burn that much brighter in her veins.

So, while Vriesea made sure not to run off or surpass her mentor, she could not help the way her gaze stared in awe at the world around her, or the way her tail was held high like a banner of pride in her excitement. She vaguely remembered from her tour that they were going somewhere with lots of moss where cats trained - but she had no idea what her mentor had planned. Weird Creekclan cat - he was probably going to regale her on the history of swimming or make her eat a fish. Her nose wrinkled slightly at the thought. Fish were gross.

It was not until the distraction of staring up through the canopy above saw the young apprnetice tripping over her own paws into her mentor's flank that she realized the tom had in fact slowed down. Catching herself, the molly pulled back from the great mass of fur that threatened to suffocate her with just its presence, before bounding past the tom onto the soft green moss. It felt like a giant nest, perfect for play-fighting on without worrying about hitting her head on rocks - really it kind of reminded her of the nursery floor. Hopping a little bit as though to test the springiness of the moss, Vrieseapaw turned back to face her mentor and stood before him eagerly, ears pricked and attentive as she awaited his commands.

She had not said much throughout the trip despite the questions that had been overrunning her mind, and still she kept silent even as more began to bother her. She was a good, patient little she-cat right? She would wait to see what was asked of her and then she would try her best and she would be careful not to get hurt or too messy. Blah...it sounded boring. But hey, that's what they wanted right?

COVESPLASH

The tom focused his gaze on his apprentice; the young she-cat seemed to bounce around the moss, almost as though testing it's durability or springiness. A smile curved across his maw-line. The mossy clearing made for a perfect place to start training. Basic tactics like hunting and battle moves could be dangerous and challenging. Especially for clumsy apprentices. Covesplash liked his apprentice although knew little of her, still, he would rather not see the small she-cat hurt or injured during the process.

"I'm glad to see you have taken in the new sights and smells around you," he said as he recalled catching the she-cat gazing around her new home in awe. So much so, she had even walked right into the flaming warrior. He had, of course not minded at all and had simply stepped back to give the clumsy feline more space. "It will be important for you to remember the smells and what you see. Navigating in the dark or through a storm can sometimes make the territory look different. Knowing it by smell and key landmarks will ensure you do not get lost."

Covesplash had already planned the sessions events. He wanted the apprentice to learn the basics of hunting as it was a valuable and important skill. Covesplash thoroughly loved hunting too, whether it was for fish or mice, or even frogs. "We are going to start with hunting. Hunting fills the bellies of our clan and without it, we would not survive long. It requires patience and both keen eyes and smell," he explained.

The flame coloured male was not sure how much his apprentice knew about hunting nor how patient she was. But, Covesplash hoped she would not find his first session too boring. "Don't worry, we will aim to catch something more exciting than fish as well. I know it's not everyone's favorite," he said, stifling a slight chuckle. "Do you have any questions before we begin?" The male twitched his long ivory whiskers, giving his apprentice several moments to decipher whether she had questions. Covesplash wanted his apprentice to be able to come to him for advice or queries if she had them.

Vrie needs a chill pill....or ten

Great, so he had noticed. Well, of course he had noticed - she had crashed right into him, after all. Still, it was not exactly something she felt like discussing when there were so many far less embarrassing matters to talk about. Like training, and how she could become an amazing warrior so everyone could stop doubting her and treating her like a helpless little kit. Even so, the young molly nodded, ears pricking forward as she listened to what he had to say.

It made sense, she supposed, though the thought made her frown a little. "But I won't be living here forever, right? Wouldn't it make more sense to learn Gorgeclan territory instead?" It was not so much a rude question, as it was poorly crafted toward the tensions between the two clans. Vrieseapaw hardly even noticed that little insensitivity though as she went on, eyes lighting slightly at her next thought. "Or are we going to learn all the territories? I heard they're all pretty different - especially the moorland, apparently it has almost no trees at all!"

Oh, right. She was rambling again wasn't she? Cutting off the flow of her curious chatter rather suddenly, the apprentice sat down and curled her tail as neatly over her paws as she could, trying to fix that little inconsistency with as much of that stuffy proper stuff she could bother managing. She really needed to get better at holding her tongue or no one would ever think she was capable of listening, and then who would ever want to spend time with her then? Most cats seemed to prefer those that were not so chatty and listened to them instead.

It was that thought - and the fact that she knew it was rude and no one liked cats who were rude - that kept Vriesea from groaning at the mention of learning to hunt. From what she had heard it sounded boring. Climbing and fighting were bound to be far more exciting, especially from what she had practiced in copying the older apprentices when they sparred and practiced back at camp. But, it was important, and a cat that could feed the clan was bound to make lots of friends, right? Besides, her brother was probably going to be scared of the bigger prey anyway so she would have to catch it for the both of them. She could deal with that, even if it was boring.

She just hoped the tom wouldn't make her fish like his clan. From what she had heard, it made stalking mice and cleaning dens sound like a blast.

Realizing she had not actually responded Vrieseapaw quickly offered the tom a nod. "Hunting, okay, I'll do my best." That was a good thing to say, effort was what they wanted, and hopefully that effort would show results too. Imagine if she brought back prey on her first hunting lesson! They were sure to be proud then, right?

Rising to her paws, Vrieseapaw kneaded the moss beneath her in anticipation for a moment, before pausing to debate the answer to his question. His question about questions, funnily enough. However, after a moment of thought, none came to mind beyond 'can we start already,' and Vrieseapaw figured that probably was not the best one to give voice to. So, she shook her head and positioned herself into her best replication of the hunting crouch she had seen the older apprentice's practicing, and blinked up at her mentor. "No questions - how do I start?"

COVESPLASH

Covesplash was taken back by the she-cat's sudden mention of Gorgeclan. However he glossed over the pas digressions and listened to her as she continued. It did make sense, but alas Covesplash did not know the other clans's territories - it would be dangerous to venture onto lands not known or patrolled by OneClan, nor could one foresee the future. Perhaps OneClan would be forever, although he really did hope it wouldn't be.

"We'll be using OneClan territory for training. Which, yes, is Creekclan's old territory," he said. "The other lands are not within OneClan and therefore could be too dangerous to travel too." Covesplash did not elaborate, explaining that some clans were being used for quarantined cats. He had only given her a simple answer, which is all he felt was needed. The tom did wonder though how apprentices of GorgeClan and MoorClan would handle learning the grounds of CreekClan. Would it affect them in their clans, should OneClan divide? Would it make them threats for Creekclan, if there is a divide? Covesplash knew he couldn't think of the future possibilities; it would affect his ability to train the young she-cat.

"The clans have united and therefore we must live under one," he said with a slight smile. Covesplash said it to his apprentice, but it was also a reminder to himself. It was a hard adjustment to remember, but important.

Covesplash twitched the end of his fluffy tail, watching as his apprentice turned over what he said. He imagined hunting was far on her excitement list, but it was a crucial skill. One she needed to know before they shifted onto battling, climbing or even swimming. If one cannot keep oneself fed, there will be no energy for battle.

"Alright," he said after several moments of silence. "Let's get started."

Covesplash lowered his own body into a low crouch; his stomach about a paw and a paw-and-a-half off the ground. The fluffy golden haired tom had his tail pointed out to one side, his paws about shoulder distance apart. The crouch was natural to the tom, but often not as such for youngsters. "This is the hunters crouch, a very basic crouch that helps keep your balance when stalking prey," he said. The warrior sat up and flicked his tail to the young she-cat, motioning for her to try.

VRIESIEAPAW

Vrieseapaw silently scolded herself at asking such questions without thinking or waiting first. It was silly, really. Of course they were only going to learn here, no one was allowed to go to Gorgeclan, and Moorclan...well honestly she had no idea what the deal was with that place, but she much preferred trees anyway so it hardly mattered right? Either way, this was the land they united in and she would just have to deal with that until the time came for them to no longer be one. Besides, who knew if her old home would ever be safe again anyway? She didn't get why they had to soil their territory with the sick when they weren't going to use Moorclan anyway, they should have made that the quarantine and kept the entire forest!

Despite her flurry of thoughts, though, Vriesea did not voice them this time. Instead, she nodded obediently at his decree and pricked her ears. "Right, of course, Oneclan cats need to know Oneclan lands," she echoed, cementing in both their minds that at the very least she understood, and he hardly needed to know her distaste on the matter. Besides...not like he could teach her anywhere else anyway, right? He probably did not even know when the camps were in the other lands! As much as picturing him more lost than her was amusing, Vriesea knew that she was better off with a mentor who knew what he was doing. Here, she had the advantage, cause her mentor lived here.

Right, starting, of course.

Snapping her mind back to attention, the apprentice stood herself back up again and watched as Covesplash performed a stance that he made look as easy as breathing. She tried to take in every detail, she really did, ears pricked and eyes scanning attentively. Yet he was quick to get back up again and signal for her own try, and she could not help feeling like she had missed something.

Even so Vrieseapaw would try her best anyway, because she had to get this right. Lowering herself in turn, Vrieseapaw aimed to position her paws under her shoulders rather than further apart or closer together, and tried to get herself as low as she could without her stomach touching the ground, and her tail as low as she could get it because she figured the plume of fluff must be rather easy to spot if she kept it up. She felt a little awkward and scrunched up, and as though walking like this would probably be rather uncomfortable, much less running, but she peered up at her mentor eagerly all the same.

"Like this, right? Did I do it good?"

COVESPLASH

Covesplash watched as his apprentice echoed back to him; seeming to be satisfied with his answer - that they would be training in OneClan. The male stretched out his front paws and watched the young she-cat; she seemed to take note of his stance, but perhaps he had been too quick with sitting up. Still, his eyes fixated on the young calico.

Vriseapaw seemed to shift into the position with what seemed like ease, but he could tell she seemed a little awkward, uncomfortable and scrunched up. The male poked his golden coloured paw at the patchy apprentice's stomach; motioning for her to lift herself up a little bit. "Relax a little bit," he said with a gentle smile. "The stance may feel a little awkward. But, with practice and time, it will gradually feel more and more normal. Lifting your stomach up a little and relaxing your posture a little, should help," he explained.

Covesplash held up his tail and motioned for the young feline to wait. Without another word, the male pranced away; hopping towards a large tree situated in the middle of the mossy clearing. The male quickly scooped up a small fallen yellow leaf and carried it quickly back to the apprentice. Covesplash dropped the leaf from his mouth about a tail-length and a half away from the apprentice.

"I want you to try and focus on the leaf and try and lunge towards it," he said, "As if it were a mouse. Placing your weight on your back legs and leaping at the target will give you greater power." The tom took a few steps away, allowing the trainee to have some space. He nodded to her, giving her the go-ahead to start.

VRIESIEAPAW

The tom did not speak at first, but she could tell he was watching, studying her. She wanted to do it perfect, show she was the perfect apprentice for him...but honestly even she knew that was farfetched. She had never hunted before, she could only give her best attempt at what the tom was showing her. So, when she felt a nudge to her underbelly in encouragement to lift it slightly, she obeyed without compaint.

If she could not be perfect without trying then she would show him she would keep trying as hard as she could until she was! That would make him happy, right? Then everyone would be proud because she was such a hard worker. The image of their anticipated praise almost made the molly purr, but she stayed silent and attentive as the tom went on with his instructing.

She would never get this right if she did not listen, after all.

So, she relaxed her stance slightly, tried to will it into feeling a little bit more normal. She would get used to it, she supposed, but those battle crouches the older apprentices practiced seemed so much more comfortable. A warrior complimented her on her attempt at copying them once, too. Maybe he was just being nice, but the praise had felt good all the same to have earned their appreciation.

Just as Vireseapaw was thinking she could straighten up again, Covesplash motioned her to stay where she was and bounded away. The molly frowned slightly, but obeyed, soon forgetting about the strangeness of the position she was holding as she watched the tom scoop up a leaf of all things, and come back to place it a short distance away from her skeptical amber gaze. Well, that was certainly...weird.

Pounce....on the leaf? Vrieseapaw blinked from the tom to the shriveled yellow plant life in questions, tail flicking behind her slightly as she considered the request. That sounded like something kits would do, really. Though he was her mentor, and he seemed to be taking it seriously...so maybe it was some important training method. Either way, there surely was not any harm to it. Not like anyone was around to laugh at her anyway if it was some kind of odd Creekclan joke.

Tensing her muscles, the molly moved one of her forepaws forward slightly, tail flickering behind her as she put her weight back on her haunches as suggested. Then, with the leaf in her sights, she sprung toward it and slammed her snowy forepaw's down onto it. Well....she got the leaf. Peering down at it between her paws, Vrieseapaw twitched her whispers, before tilting her head to peer up at the tom curiously. "I don't know any cats who would eat leaves."

COVESPLASH

Covesplash appreciated the young one's fierce determination; it seemed to glint in her eyes and movements. Vrieseapaw was truly wanting to do the best she could and for that, he was glad. Some apprentices acted better than their mentors, thinking they knew how to hunt and fight already. But, of course, they failed when truly put to the test. Covesplash was thankful that he did not have to bother with such nonsense tests with Vrieseapaw.

The tom watched as the young one shifted her weight carefully and rocked back. She seemed to have strength and power behind her legs; maybe a fine jumper. Likely due to her heritage from GorgeClan. He nodded as she completed the task, but he could sense the confusion in her tone. The apprentice seemed a little unsure in his methods. The tom knew that most GorgeClan cats were fairly 'battle pro' but, he unfortunately for her, was not. He could tell however that hunting was perhaps not her favorite element of training.

A smile crept to his maw. "Ha! No, no.. The leaf is not to eat. The leaf is to test your jumping ability. Your coordination. If you missed the leaf, we'd have to focus on your distancing skills and coordination. I suppose it was in some ways a test," he explained. The tom twitched his ivory whiskers, deciding that his apprentice was ready to take on something a little more challenging. A proper hunt was in order, he decided. "Since you've proven yourself to be coordinated. Let's see how reliable that nose is of yours. Scent the air and let's see what prey is around," he asked.

VRIESIEAPAW

Vrieseapaw flicked her ears at the sound of her mentor laughing, gaze drifting to the amused smile that had grown across his maw - however, he did not seem to be laughing at her obediently hunting the leaf, so she let it roll off her harmlessly. Of course cats did not eat leaves, that was obvious. Though she supposed his intention made sense...sure was a good way to practice skills without wasting prey on clumsy pouncing.

After noting that the intent was to had landed upon the leaf, and that it was in fact pinned beneath her snow-tipped paws, the molly rose her tail with a purr, stepping back from the leaf to turn back to her mentor. So she had done good! Her first success as an apprentice - the first of many, she hoped, because she was not about to be a bad apprentice by any means. Well...at least, not intentionally, right? Hopefully they did not judge too harshly for accidents. She did not wish to see a less than lenient side of her so-far friendly mentor.

No, that would hint to him not liking her, and she needed her mentor to want to train her if she was ever going to do well.

"Well then I passed," the calico molly chirped, before promptly deciding about saying more. Gloating was not a very good thing to do, but it was okay to be a little proud about achievements, right? She supposed so...Appreciate but don't show off. She could do that, she supposed. It sounded easy enough.

Ears pricked, the apprentice drew herself back into focus as the fluffy warrior went on. Scenting out prey? Well, that was probably pretty easy, she knew what they smelled like from the fresh-kill pile, after all. So she just had to....sniff the ground, she supposed? No....he said the air.

Whiskers twitching, the molly gave a few sniffs, before frowning softly, and parting her jaws slightly as she breathed in again, hoping perhaps she could draw in scents better the way she sometimes saw others do. The scents were all over the place, really - she could hardly smell anything over just the scents of cats and plants. Narrowing her eyes slightly, the molly flicked her tail in frustration, before trying again, attempting to focus on the individual scents that flooded over her, trying to find something, anything, that smelled like food.

There! Eyes lighting up, the molly took a slight step forward to sniff a little closer to the ground, just to be sure, before she peeked back toward Covesplash. "Here, I smell a squirrel here," she announced, waving her paw slightly in the air before her for a moment before stepping back to let her mentor investigate. She recognized the scent from the prey pile, but it was hard to pick up among everything else...faint, which meant it was long gone, but she hardly knew about that. She was just pleased to have found it's scent.

COVESPLASH

The tom gave his apprentice a slight rise of his brow as she proudly remarked how she had passed. The apprentice was doing well; but Covesplash couldn't help but worry whether she really had faith in him; was it just who she was, or was it the fact he was from CreekClan? The thoughts gradually vanished as he watched his apprentice attempt to pick up nearby scents.

The russet tom was sitting down, his long fox-like tail wrapped carelessly across his body. The sound of birds squawking in the tree-tops had his ears shifting to one side - although distant, they could still be faintly heard, but the scent of something else lingered under his nose. The sound of the creature difficult to pick up, but the smell was not one you could forget. There was some kind of rabbit nearby. Likely having only recently escaped a burrow from across the abandoned MoorClan borders.

As his apprentice indicated she had found a scent. The tom shifted towards her and gave a nod, confirming the stale scent of a squirrel. "Very nice," he said, "The scent however is stale. The squirrel is no longer in the area. Let's try find something a little more recent," he explained. Covesplash knew that detecting prey could be difficult. Especially now that OneClan had so many different scents smeared across the territory. The warrior motioned for the apprentice to stand where he was. "Do you smell that earthy smell? Earthy and grassy, with a little hint of fur? We've got a rabbit," he explained.

"Rabbits are quick creatures with sharp hearing. They run if detected. Try follow the scent, keeping your weight on your back legs to not only silence your steps, but prepare yourself for launch. The trick is to get as close as you can before they notice you. You ideally want to catch them while they're still. Otherwise, you will have to run to catch it." Covesplash was terrible at running. His thick fur and somewhat shorter legs made speed a challenge. But, he had watched the cats of Moor catch the stray rabbits as they veered into OneClan. It wasn't easy, but Covesplash had found little tricks to ensure he could in fact catch them.

VRIESIEAPAW

To note what she did wrong: she was quiet enough, but when the trail curved and she followed it she ended up being upwind rather than downwind as she started so the rabbit could smell her oops.

Perhaps it was a blessing that Vrieseapaw did not notice the raised brow she was offered for her pride. She was already frantic enough in her mind, not to need to second guess herself and her actions yet again at the slightest gesture. She was always questioning everything, after all...what was expected of her, and how to best meet those expectations no matter what part of her was squandered for it.

Instead, the apprentice allowed herself to focus on the task at paw. After all, she had been right. The scent was indeed a squirrel, however, it was long since gone. Well...at least she had found something, right? Ears flicking, Vriesea bit her tongue again and simply gave a nod of agreement, deciding best to go through with his lesson rather than commenting yet again. To find only a stale scent probably made her look fool enough already, to put more focus on that would do her no good - right?

At the tom's gesture, she dismissed her wandering thoughts and padded to his side, scenting the earth and the air where he indicated. Earthy, grassy, furry...her eyes brightened like two amber suns. Yes, she knew that scent, there was definitely a rabbit. Now that she thought about it, Vriesea could definitely tell the difference of how fresh this scent was. With the squirrel it would have been a struggle to find where it had even gone. With this rabbit, however, the more she singled out the one scent the more she felt as though her nose was drawing her after it.

Snow-tipped paws stalled as the tom spoke again, no more than two steps after following her nose as she realized she had even moved at all. Glancing back at Covesplash, Vrieseapaw tilted her head softly and listened with every intent to look attentive and obedient. Follow the rabbit, weight back, silent steps, catch it when its still. It sounded strangely simple and difficult at the same time, but Vrieseapaw was nothing if not determined.

Lowering herself back into her hunting crouch with his tips from earlier taken into account, she settled more of her weight into her hind paws and began to follow her nose silently after the scent. It took a moment and some adjustment, but in time she managed to silence her paw steps and feel a little less awkward and wobbly in the pose. She still needed practice, of course, but she felt a flicker of pride in thinking she was doing well for her first session.

The rabbit really was close she noticed, once she had settled into the feel of stalking the creature. The trail curved as she followed it, the path of a curious young rabbit foraging for a meal, and she made sure to stick to it as perfectly as she could. Her paws did not make a sound as she moved and she felt a spark of satisfaction as she saw what looked to be movement up ahead. A blur of brown fur was quick to shoot away the moment she spotted it, however, bolting for cover.

Realizing that clearly the element of surprise was lost, but her determination certainly was not, the apprentice sprung forth and dashed after it. However, the creature was too quick and agile for a clumsy youth built for climbing and fighting, and was successful in squeezing into a burrow near a tree's base before she could even hope to swipe at it. Gone.

Flattening her ears, the molly lashed her tail in frustration as she skidded to a stop, taking a moment to lap her tongue over her slightly aching paw to check its state. Fine, just a little sore from the moment she tripped over a tree root. She shook it out, before testing it on the ground, and glaring after her lost prey. She had been quiet, so what went wrong! Huffing irritably, the apprentice peeked back to see if she could spot her mentor, before deciding to trot back along the trail to where she had left him.

COVESPLASH

Covesplash paid close attention to his apprentice; watching as her eyes brightened as she tasted the fresh scent of the rabbit. A small smile curved across his maw, as he saw that she understood the difference. The she-cat was a little over excited, maybe almost a little too energetic for her own good, but she was clever and that much he could see as she determinedly followed the scent of the earthy rabbit; holding her excitement in check.

The russet warrior really hoped his young apprentice would catch the brown rabbit. Every apprentice needed to see success in their training and Vrieseapaw needed to see success, success such as catching a rabbit. Training was difficult for sure, with so much to learn, in what felt like such a short time. There was a lot to learn and a lot of mistakes would be made. It was only the nature of training.

Vrieseapaw managed to keep her steps silent, but alas the element of surprise had been lost as the rabbit took off; bolting for cover as soon as it sought it's senses on the apprentice. Covesplash felt a surge of pride though as his apprentice had clearly listened to his instructions; her crouch near flawless. Albeit, the rabbit was agile and quick, while Vrieseapaw was not so much. Rats, he cussed under his breathe. Although her tactics were great, the hunt had been unsuccessful. The apprentice returned, her ears back and a look of defeat smeared on her maw.

"Rats,"
he meowed to her as she returned. "You were so close," he said. Covesplash shared in the she-cat's frustration. Hunting was often at times a matter of luck. Not all warriors caught every prey they scented. "It seems like the rabbit was just a bit too quick. I presume it scented or saw you, giving it the advantage. If you can, you can stalk down-wind which will mask your scent. But, sometimes that isn't always an option," he explained, referring to the direction of prey vs. the direction of wind. The tom gave his apprentice a smile though, not wanting her to feel too bad about the missed rabbit. "You did very well though. We can try again, if you like?"
