The Still Life of Winter

[attr="class","sinnert"]The absence of gurgling water was absolutely maddening. The only noise that reached the large toms ears was the crunch of crisp snow underfoot and the unmistakable sound of prey trying to sneakily scavenge for food. The stillness of leaf-bare left everything to imagine, dead and bare tree branches reaching for the sky as if asking to be swallowed whole, birds only chirping out in wonder as if to check that they were not alone, and the world appearing as if frozen by time, forever in a standstill of hellish reticence.

Huckleberryroot walked along the frozen rivers edge, looking for a weak patch of ice he could break through to go fishing. The tom was hankering for the taste of fish and vole or mice just wouldn't do. No, he wanted something fresh that he could share with his dear mate, Berrychirp. A soft expressional sigh welled up in his chest before letting it out, a puff of vapor coming from his lips. What he wouldn't do for his mate was beyond him. For her he'd do anything and he truly meant anything. However, he knew their relationship had fallen on rocky times and no matter what Huckleberryroot wanted to do, much less try, was wasted effort. She didn't want to be with him right now, the loss of their unborn litter was a heavy blow to the both of them. Neither knew how to cope with the idea of being a mated pair without kits.

While she cried herself to sleep, Huckleberry grew numb to the whole ordeal. He didn't want to get his hopes up only for them to be dashed in the end, which always happened and this recent miscarriage had been the last nail in the coffin. While his love was unconditional when it came to Berrychirp, he couldn't help but feel the rift between them in their relationship. Huckleberryroot desperately wanted to please his mate, but he no longer knew how and that made things even more frustrating for him. So in an effort to think things through and try to find a solution to their situation he decided to go fishing. In the dead of leaf-bare. Perhaps not the wisest idea, but fishing helped calm his overactive mind and helped him put things into perspective.

And so here he was wandering along the flooded rivers edge like a mouse-brain in hopes of being able to catch some fish. By Starclan he hoped Hornetcall didn't find him.

[attr="class","bandittttttttt3"]HORNETCALL
[attr="class","bandittttttttt2"] The decision to be alone had driven Hornetcall out of camp early that morning. The news that Berrychirp had lost her kits was spread throughout camp like wildfire and while he'd felt a small surge of happiness at the knowledge that his brother had once again failed at something, he felt a dull pang in his chest knowing how much Berrychirp was hurt by the news. It was hard not to, after all. They all slept in the same den, her soft weeping was not lost on him or the others. Sure, he could have said something but truthfully, in this moment he didn't know if anything he could say would help. It seemed that as of late, the she-cat had chosen her side and was slowly sinking with that decision and while she regretted it, extended no olive branch forward.

And in truth, he wasn't the kind to do that either. Stubborn and prideful, he preferred the idea of her coming to him and admitting she was wrong, but thus far it had been moons since they'd talked - really talked - the way they used to. Hornetcall had grown used to the silence from Huckleberryroot, but it felt like as of late, he'd lost her completely too. That loss was heartbreaking, but he tried not to dwell too much on the pain.

He was lost in thought, his eyes narrowed and locked on the ground before his paws, he’d strolled through the CreekClan territory with his mind swimming with thoughts. This was a normal occurrence - it was why he chose to fill his time with patrols instead. Frequently volunteering for multiple in a day to keep himself moving. Moving was better than thinking, because when he thought, his mind tended to wander to the things he’d lost. Berrychirp. Even Huckleberryroot crossed his mind on occasion - much to the tom’s dissatisfaction.

Sighing, he trod through the flooded riverbanks that were coated with a firm layer of ice. With each pawstep, he heard the groan and crunch of the thin layer that kept him above the water. Blinking, the large ginger tabby twitched his fluffy tail back and forth, his gaze sliding past then snapping back to the massive frame of a fellow CreekClanner he knew all too well. It didn’t take more than a second before the fur on his neck shot up and his teeth bared, tail twitching back and forth with irritation. He managed to not hiss, but instead spoke slowly, his voice lowered. “What are you doing here?” While they were both warriors and both had free reign of their territory, he still thought of himself as higher than Huckleberryroot and had no intention of changing his mind.

[attr="class","sinnert"]So deep in thought Huckleberryroot didn't even notice the sound of another approaching him until they spoke. The fur on his back raised as he jumped slightly from the sudden shock. When he noticed the voice meant him no harm - at least in the here and now - he calmed down before casting the tom a withering look. "Last I checked I'm old enough to wander about Creekclan as I please." Huckleberryroot could keep the growl out of his voice as he gave his brother a hate filled look. His brother. A funny thought that Huckleberryroot couldnt help but chuckle at. He had no familial bond with the golden white tom who stood across from him. There was nothing there, Hornetcall killed any relationship he had with Huckleberryroot the day he decided to betray him. No, he was no brother of his. "Maybe I should be asking you what you are doing here?" The large brown and white tabby all but spat out. "Oh wait, I think I know why," Huckleberryroot said. What were once open and friendly eyes now turned into cold brown pools, a mean glitter of menace glittered instead. "You have come here to gloat. I wouldn't expect anything different from a low-life like you." Huckleberryroot said cruelly.

It was a trying time that Hornetcall decided to find him. Where he was at his most vulnerable point, broken from his mates ignorance of his existence and saddened by the lost of yet another failed litter. He didn't want to be seen like this, especially by Hornetcall who would all but rub his failure in his face. To criticize him and tell him how wrong Berrychirp was for choosing him as a mate, for choosing a tom who could not give her what she desired most: children. And perhaps he would be right, but the alternative left a horrible taste in his mouth and made him feel ill. No. He would not let Hornetcall ridicule him like so.

And thus he decided to lash out instead. To be mean spirited was a lot easier to swallow than to allow the large ginger tom to see him weak. He had to be strong for himself and for Berrychirp. Perhaps he could mourn in the solace of his lonesome, away from Berrychirp and the clan and especially well out of the way of Hornetcall.

[attr="class","bandittttttttt3"]HORNETCALL
[attr="class","bandittttttttt2"] Hornetcall didn’t spend time in camp much if he could avoid it - though unlike those who chose to spend their time alone, he simply volunteered himself for as many patrols as possible. He’d been told countless times he needed to be careful of running himself into the ground, but the golden tom often chuckled in response. He was stronger than that. He’d lost a lot in his moons - more than he cared to think about most days if he was being honest. Deep down, the tiniest part of him wished that things wouldn’t have changed, that his closest friends could have been happy for him when he became a warrior all those moons ago. But instead of being happy and congratulating him, there began a feud bigger than he could have ever imagined.

Clearing his throat, he rolled his eyes and pushed himself onto the ice, carefully picking his way out onto the creek that had frozen over. Beneath the thin layer, he could see fish swimming and darting away from his looming form before curiously poking back once they realized they were safe beneath the ice. “Such hostility. He feigned being hurt as he spoke, his gaze turning toward the massive brown tabby tom who was so quick to jump to being angry. “I didn’t follow you out here, you paranoid mousebrain.” He snapped back, though continued to keep his gaze lowered to the fish below. He was powerful and if he was careful, he might be able to break through the ice where it was thinnest without falling through.

CreekClan could use some prey.

Sorry to hear about your kits.” He said finally, though the tone of his voice showed he wasn’t apologetic at all. It was a formality at best that he had to offer his kin but inside his head he thought only of calico she-cat that lost them. He felt sorry for her and moreover that her mate had provided her with another failed litter. She didn’t deserve that. She deserved someone better. Hornetcall could be cold, but he decided that today would not be the day that he picked away at Huckleberryroot. He could be broken in other ways - his own mate seemed to be doing a good enough job with the way she cried for her lost kits and distanced herself from him too. It was nice to see his brother in as much pain as he was in at the loss of Berrychirp.

It’s a shame, really. Will you two be trying again?” His voice remained flat and he didn’t bother looking toward the tom as he lifted his forepaws off the ground on a particularly slushy piece of ice. Slamming himself onto the surface, it broke and freezing water splashed up. The ice around him remained intact but the tom was careful to back up onto thicker ice as he chipped away at the fishing hole he’d made for himself, scooping chunks of ice out of the water and flinging it past his shoulder.

[attr="class","sinnert"]The silence between the two brothers was deafening. The only sound Huckleberryroot could hear was the pounding of his own heart in his ear drums, a ferocious sound that proved to him just how alive he was. Silently the tom stood there on the frozen rivers edge, woeful brown eyes glaring daggers into the pelt of Hornetcall. Of all the days you have to see me like this you choose today. Huckleberryroot thought angrily to himself, ear twitching in mild annoyance while the tip of his tail twitched back and forth in impatience. Obviously Huckleberryroot could just leave the conversation entirely and not bother with his brothers antics, but part of him believed that if he backed down now he was conceding to Hornetcall's authority. Proving to the ginger and white tabby he is right and Huckleberryroot is wrong. And all the dusagreements, fights, and arguments he's had with his dear brother would be all for nothing. So it was best that he faced this confrontation that was bound to get ugly head ob, at least that way he can show Hornetcall he can't be trampled and walked all over on.

Mahogany colored eyes narrowed in contempt when he spotted Hornetcall rolling his eyes, watch it dear brother. Berrychirp isn't here to keep you safe. The large earthy and snow colored tom thought to himself. Huckleberryroot never pegged himself to be a violent cat, he was actually quite the opposite. Friendly, open, and considerate of others Huckleberryroot enjoyed the company of friends and family. Of getting to know new faces both inside and outside of his clan. However, with all things concerning Hornetcall, Huckleberryroot turned into an entirely different person. Someone who grew callous and cold, always having a vendetta against the massive fiery orange tom. And someone who knew Berrychirp hated. As much as he tried - which albeit isn't exactly very much - to put his differences aside with Hornetcall he could never truly get over his wounded pride, his agony over the betrayal of his kin.

How could one be expected to overcome something so profoundly traumatizing when there was so much hate burning in his soul? The answer always seemed to elude Huckleberryroot, leaving him to rot with his disdain and anger. An ear flicked in the direction of Hornetcall when he finally spoke. Huckleberryroot couldnt help but snort outloud that was accompanied by a sarcastic eyeroll. "It maybe disbelieving to hear, Hornetcall, but you are a very easy person to hate." Brown eyes glittered with menace before he continued, "it's just something about you. It's no wonder why you have no real friends," Huckleberryroot chuckled lowly. "Left all alone in the end." The beast of a tom couldn't help but smile sardonically before he started making his away from the river. His brother had official soured his mood and he no longer felt like fishing, let alone be in his presence. He could do other menial tasks, perhaps he could gather fresh moss for Berrychirp or hunt her favorite prey item. Perhaps that'll land him back into her good graces. It was honestly all Huckleberryroot could hope for, to feel the warmth of his mates bright smile instead of the coldness he felt in his heart.

Only Huckleberryroot didn't make it far for Hornetcall calling him mouse-brained had the massive brown tabby whirling towards the ginger and white tom, tail lashing furiously behind him. "Do not resort to calling me mouse-brained when you were the one who asked why I was out here." He all but screeched out, "if anyone is a mouse-brain it is you!" Huckleberryroot hissed out in disgust. However, Huckleberryroot's anger did not last long. The cold bucket of reality hit him hard enough to cause a stuttering breath to leave his lips at Hornetcall's next words. Reducing his once blazing anger to a non-existent heat. It sometimes amazed Huckleberryroot how cruel the brothers could be towards one another. How cruel Huckleberryroot could be.

"Save your hollow words for someone else, Hornetcall." He all but whispered out, finally addressing his brother directly with his name. He knew what Hornetcall was trying to do, yet it didn't hurt any less. To broach such a sensitive topic was a new low for the orange and white tabby - one Huckleberryroot should have not only seen coming, but expected as well. Who would have known such words could cut as deeply as claws could. "How can you ask such a thing? How can you be so cruel?!" Huckleberryroot spat out in frustration, anger, and sadness. Huckleberryroot doubted he'd ever have the heart to be so callous, but then again he has been surprising himself as of late. And even if I wanted to I doubt I could bear to watch Berrychirpbe crushed again. I think this is Starclan trying to say something. Perhaps Berrychirp and i were never meant to be parents the warrior thought solemnly to himself and who was he kidding. No one. Huckleberryroot doubted he could handle the heartbreak and loss of another failed litter. The joy he felt planning out all the kits names, the excitement he felt at the prospect of starting a family with Berrychirp that he could love and treasure, and the unbearable sadness that made him sick to the stomach when yet again he had failed. Failed Berrychirp and failed himself. No, it was becoming too much for him to handle and Berrychirp's ire towards him only made things worst. Perhaps once he felt like he could deal with the endless cycle once again he'll try one more time with Berrychirp, before giving up once and forall. One more time to hope and pray to Starclan to have children.

"Your cruelty knows no bounds. How I wished you were never my brother."

1,000+ wirds o.o I think we both know Huck would get his ass handed to him by hornet, but let the guy dream LOL also talk about emotional and melodramatic

[attr="class","bandittttttttt3"]HORNETCALL
[attr="class","bandittttttttt2"] If you would have asked Hornetcall forty-some moons ago if he and Huckleberryroot would ever be at each other’s throats, he would have laughed at the very notion. There’d been a time where blood ran thicker than water and he firmly stood beside the massive tabby before him now. He’d have done anything for him - lay down his own life - to make sure that no harm would fall to his brother. Despite the fact that they were of the same litter, the ginger tom had always taken the role as the eldest, his actions less sporadic and filled with emotion than Huckleberryroot’s. The sense of need to protect his brother had been so strong that - when the opportunity had arisen to save him from a fox when they were younger, he hadn’t thought twice.

Now sure, his head had swollen a little bit and pride took hold, there was one thing that was certain in Hornetcall’s mind from that day - the intention was noble. But it seemed that it mattered not to Huckleberrypaw then. The stake that drove between them was his own life and once, he’d tried to save their relationship. Now? Standing before the tom who spattered and spit, Hornetcall wondered if saving his brother had been worth it in the end.

Yet you are the only one who voices such strong emotion, Huckleberryroot. It sounds more like you are projecting your own feelings, but no matter…” He shrugged passively as he made his way out onto the frozen water, not bothering to look at the cat he was forced to call his brother. He froze at the bellowing of the other tom and let out an exasperated sigh, looking down quickly at the water to see the shadows of fish dart off down stream. “Do you care if CreekClan eats this winter or is it your goal to scare off every ounce of prey in our territory?” He said with growing irritation, his own tail tip flicking slowly. No wonder his mate kept losing kits.

Finally, Hornetcall turned his gaze upward toward the tom who stood on the banks, unaffected by his anger. As quickly as it started, it ended - at the mention of kits. He watched the way his shoulders seemed to fall and the voice that had echoed through the forest moments before, fell into a whisper. “Huckleberryroot, you’ve gotten what you deserve to receive, my only regret is that Berrychirp suffers with you.” His tone was softer too, and genuine this time. “She deserves more than you will ever be able to provide her, the sooner you stop fooling yourself, the happier she can be. Don’t drag her down too.

He shook his pelt and turned his gaze back to the hole he’d broken, lowering himself to crouch beside it, close enough where he’d be able to sweep any passing fish up in a moment but careful not to hang over the edge. He’d have remained quiet after that, except his overly emotional brother spoke again, volume climbing louder again. “I am saying what I see and what I’ve observed. If reality is that harsh for you, you shouldn’t have been made a warrior. We have to make hard decisions every day for the better of the clan. Thus far, I’ve seen you flounder under a fox and fail your mate time and time again. A smarter cat would have realized the pain their inflicting on their mate and others. I understand how that must be difficult for you to hear.

Clearing his throat, he rose, eyes once again locking on the brown tabby, shoulders squared. “I let our relationship go because I saw how reckless you could be and how you drag others down. You can be liked or you can be respected, Huckleberryroot. Maybe you should do something that deserves respect. Maybe then you’ll understand.

It was abnormal for Hornetcall to speak so much - especially to his brother. The tom didn’t waver nor did he seem angry as he spoke. The only tone that could really be read was indifference - and if searched for a little deeper - disappointment.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, one of us needs to make sure the queens eat tonight.” He gave him a pointed look, not bothering to name her specifically. Hornetcall knew that Huckleberryroot would read between the lines and know what he meant. And if he didn’t, well then maybe he really was as mouse-brained as he thought.

[attr="class","sinnert"]There were no words out there that could properly express what Huckleberryroot had felt when Hornetcall told him he got what he deserved. His once angry features turned into a carefully placed mask of neutrality. It left his heart aching and his paws weak as he swallowed thickly. Perhaps Starclan was punishing him for some wrong he can barely remember or perhaps not. Huckleberryroot opened his maw as if he was going to speak, but closed it with a clack as if he thought better of it. He doubted anybody blamed Berrychirp for the loss of their litters, for surely it couldn't realistically be all his fault, could it? No, his seed had taken root, though for whatever reason Berrychirp could not handle it. To nurture the unborn kits inside her like a "proper" she cat. Yet Huckleberryroot not once complained or blamed Berrychirp for the failure at properly conceiving. How could he? She was his sun and his moon, his everything and if him taking on the blame of the failures lessened Berrychirp's grief he'd do it a million times over. To him, her blaming him was a lot better alternative. And so he kept these feelings and thoughts hidden, taking the ridicule from not only Berrychirp, but everyone else in the clan. Let them believe he is a failure, a tom who could not produce a single kit. He'll protect Berrychirp's interest for as long as he could.

"And you truly believe you could do better by her?" Huckleberryroot did not hiss or spit, he was calm as he gazed at Hornetcall. "You make it sound like your some kind of hero. You believe that all of this is so simple to fix," he said out loud, softly yet with a strong tone of voice. 'She is broken Hornetcall, you wouldn't be able to do any better than me' is what he kept to himself. "She deserves more than you and I both, Hornetcall. Don't paint yourself as some kind of noble tom, we both know that on the inside there is nothing but a manipulative pathological liar. You are just as unworthy of her as I am." Huckleberryroot's tone of voice was cold and calculating when he glared at his brother.

His next bout of words infuriated Huckleberryroot, but he went through great pains to try to remain calm. How dare he! He knew nothing and yet he had the audacity to speak like he did. The hackles on his back raised up in anger as he flexed his claws in the snow laden ground. He had to release these pent up emotions somehow without attacking his brother. That would be unfit of a warrior and the last thing he needed was to be scolded like a kit. "You have seen nothing, but what you want to see. You do not know what pains I go through to keep Berrychirp happy. I doubt you'd be able to do what I do so don't act all high and mighty." He doubted Hornetcall would know what secret or "great pains" he's gone through, let alone talking about. Those were secrets best kept hidden for the calamity they could weave was monstrous. "Your memory and eyesight must be failing you then if you believe I was floundering underneath that fox. Last I checked I held my own while you took your sweet time getting reinforcements." He grumbled out as his brown gaze looked elsewhere.

"You only became a warrior early because of my efforts. Don't delude yourself into thinking you got your promotion from your hard work alone," his brown gaze sharply landed back onto the massive golden white tabby before him. "While I'll always be grateful you saved my life the fact of the matter is that you claim entitlement of my efforts. While I was stuck in the medicine cat den, forgotten and treated as a failure you were praised. For what? Chasing the fox off the territory? I don't recall you fighting, but running," Huckleberryroot spoke with a matter-of-fact tone as he gazed at his kin. The horrific scar on his left side burned with a phantom pain. It never truly healed, the fur never grew back and the monstrosity of it marred his otherwise handsome pelt. It was a constant reminder, but one he surprisingly treasured. "Where are your scars, Hornetcall?"

Yet as much as Huckleberryroot wanted to dismiss it Hornetcall was right to some degree. He had not done anything noteworthy that deserved respect, at least something that is known to others. Huckleberryroot worked in the shadows, preferring not to lay his problems onto others shoulders. To be the sole bearer of not only his own burdens, but others as well. Taking the blame for Berrychirp is an attest to that. "You wound me Hornetcall. I truly hope you find satisfaction in being so malicious." He shook his head in disappointment, "I'll only leave Berrychirp when she tells me she no longer wants me. Until then," he gave Hornetcall a look, "happy hunting, brother." And with that Huckleberryroot turned around and attempted to get away. May he hope to not see Hornetcall for a moon, Starclan permit it.

feel free to stop his exit. I felt there wasnt anything else Huck had to say xD

[attr="class","bandittttttttt3"]HORNETCALL
[attr="class","bandittttttttt2"] Hornetcall always struggled with knowing when to quit. In a fight, he tended to leave his opponents broken and bloodied well past what was necessary. In verbal arguments, he tended to tear someone down until there was no repairing the situation. That explained why he and Huckleberryroot were no longer on speaking terms - at least, not cordially. And things only ever seemed to get worse when he tried to fix something, rather than better. Because his pride frequently stepped in the way, building a wall between himself and whatever he thought might be worth resolving. In his mind, he’d thought about resolving this feud more times than he could count, but the second he was in front of his brother, his blood boiled and he couldn’t control his words. Like now.

I’m not. Is that what you’d like to hear, Huckleberryroot?” He growled, his voice low as he felt his tail lashing back and forth behind him. His anger was usually so controlled, yet whenever Berrychirp was involved - whether it be physically or in conversation, those walls seemed to tear themselves down. “I’m not better, and you’re absolutely right, she deserves better than either of us. But that’s my point, you idiot. You know you’re just as bad as I am, if not worse. So let her go.” The words came out in a low growl as he found himself reeling with rage. He didn’t want to be the one to hurt Berrychirp and thankfully over the last few moons, he hadn’t been. But Huckleberryroot was, and in his eyes, that was worse. “You keep her at your side for what? To try to give her kits she’s lost countless times? To keep putting her through she same hell?” He found himself snarling and the ginger tom had to take a step back or he knew he’d fight with the tom. His tail was still lashing as he sucked down cold air into his lungs, trying to calm the rage that was building inside of him.

You’re right, I don’t. Because it’s gotten to the point where it’s so pathetic that I had to look away. I couldn’t watch you hurt her anymore.” His calmness was returning, albeit slowly. His words were growing slower, more deliberate and as he carefully rose to his full height, having not even realized he was beginning to crouch down as if about to pounce. He took a deep breath and slowly spoke again, the cold, monotone returning. He smiled with others, but when it came to Huckleberryroot, he had nothing to smile for. “I fulfilled the duty asked of me. I was sent to bring help, and when I returned, I drove the foxes out of the territory. I didn’t let one almost kill me. I didn’t need to fight, because my job was given to me by Honeystep. She told me to go back to camp for help, I did that. They kept you to hold the foxes back, you nearly died instead.

He almost laughed at the tom’s mention of scars. He didn’t look at his brother’s scars as anything more than failure for the job he’d been given and he never would.

Hearing that his brother had no intention of leaving Berrychirp’s side - at least until she asked him to, his heart sank and his pelt fluffed up. “You truly care for no one but yourself, Huckleberryroot. You allow your own feelings to control the way you feel, with complete disregard for how it impacts those around you. At least, if you’re going to kill her slowly by staying at her side, stop giving her kits. I can’t watch her break anymore, and not by your paw. brother.
