let it snow

Dark clouds hovered over the horizon, ruining the view Cottoncloud had awoken so early to see. But, though weak and seemingly flickering, the rising sun would not stopped. Pale fragments of orange and yellow were speckled across the sky like colorful leaves upon the snowy floor. Cottoncloud's gaze scanned the sky with amazement and awe. Never, when she had been entrapped in the life of a kittypet, would she have dreamed of such a wonder. It was strange how different the sky looked when she looked upon it with freed eyes. Her face lit up as a ray of sun broke away from the clouds, and dapples of warmth brushed her fur. It felt like a gift from the star warriors themselves.

A fat snowflake drifted from the skies above and planted itself firmly on the ground before her. A large grin broke through her more serious facade and covered her face. Snow! It was a new and fascinating concept. More flakes slowly feel, and a few even landed on her own fur. Cottoncloud twisted herself this way and that to see how precariously they rested on her. Even those small turns were enough to send a few tumbling to the ground below.

A squeal of delight left her. Not only was it beautiful, but it could assist her in her attempts of hunting! Who better to teach her than nature itself? With Antlerburr still fast asleep in the den, it seemed she would have to practice what he had already taught her. She crouched low to the ground, imaging the tom's voice in her head. Body low and stay completely still. Focus only on your prey. Her eyes traced a snowflake as it descended. Before it could touch the ground, she leaped. The movement was awkward and most definitely laughable for a she-cat warrior her age, but she still landed on all four paws without falling over. An absolute win in her mind.

Cottoncloud sat back and scanned the camp again. Maybe someone else could help her catch snowflakes.

HEMLOCKBITE
- we're walking the wire, so look out down below -
Leaf-bare was in full swing in CreekClan, and though Hemlockbite missed the taste of fish, of which he dined on regularly when the water was not frozen over, he found this to be his favorite season. His normally thick coat had now thickened more in preparation for the cold and hunting came much easier now that he could blend into the snow with ease. It was more of a challenge in greenleaf when he stood out like a white cloud on a rainy day. Dangling from his jaws was a tan and grey rabbit and a chipmunk, his prizes of the day. He was excited to deliver them to camp during these scarce times.

He paused briefly as snow began to fall gently around him. He looked up slightly, leaf-bare was a beautiful time if you knew how to take a moment to appreciate it. He was almost to the entrance now, he could barely make out the scent of his clanmates through the smell of his prey, but it was there strong and comforting. Hemlockbite hadn't been a warrior for too long, now. And he was enjoying the freedom to come and go in camp without a hassle, as long as he kept up with his own patrol schedule. He took a quick sweep with his eyes, now that he had reached the entrance, to make sure there were no breaches to be seen and when he was satisfied that everything was in order he pushed his was through the bramble and into camp.

He was greeted by a small squeal of delight and he perked his ears toward source. Cottoncloud, a relatively new addition to CreekClan and former kittypet, was playing in the flurries close by. It warmed his heart to see her enjoying the snow when so many other seemed to despise it. He made haste to drop the fresh-kill into its place before making his way toward his clanmate. Kittypets joined clans much more frequently than they used to. It wasn't unheard of to hear that a clan had recruited on to their ranks. He watched quietly as she stalked a flake, pouncing unsteadily toward it before a shaky landing. He approached with a warm smile, "Very good, Cottoncloud! Don't worry, it will get easier with practice. Before you know it you'll be stalking snowflakes in your sleep." He winked playfully at her before turning his face upward toward the sky. He allowed the flurries to land on his face like gentle kisses, but as he opened his eyes, he swatted at them, tearing up on his hind legs, as if they were menacing bees.

Turning in place, trying to take down as many snowflakes as he could, he finally dropped to his paws, spinning in circles fighting them off again with snaps of his jaw. The icy water that had melted in his mouth was a welcome treat and he snipped around for more, chuckling all the way.

The snow began drifting down at a new and startling pace, the fatness of the flakes trading their width for speed as smaller, more delicate pieces of snow tumbled from the sky above. It was quick to cover her being, encasing her like one of their own. She was a giant snowflake. Snowcloud. Or Cottonsnow? A giggle of delight rippled through her as she shook herself vigorously to remove the sticky snowflakes. She was now slightly damp, but still did not mind. Perhaps it would better prepare her for the task of swimming that was expected from all cats of Creekclan. That would be quite the experience.

She perked up as a voice tickled her ears. Cottoncloud grinned as she saw a white tom and met his piercing blue eyes. "Really? Thank you! Hemlockbite, right?" she meowed in response. The hardest part of acclimating to clan ways were the names. With two parts to them, the names grew harder and harder to remember as more and more grew to become warriors. It was a daunting task to try and memorize every tom and she-cat's foriegn name, but Cottoncloud was nearly there.

As the tom lunged up on two paws, Cottoncloud grin widened. What a feat of strength and grace. "Impressive." she meowed. Her legs groaned in protest as she fought upwards herself. She could hardly balance, as, truth be told, she was still slightly overweight from the overfeeding of her twoleg, but yet Cottoncloud still managed to spend two heart-beats with her fore-paws batting at miniscule snowflakes. Her thump back down to the earth was certainly ungraceful, but she had already turned to witness Hemlockbite's next show.

Eating snow! Her eyes lit up with awe as he snapped about like a hungry  fox. His chuckle was met with her own bouts of giggles when delight simply filled her to the brim. She turned to face him with a more serious demeanour, however.

"That was fun and all.. but can you do this?" her tail swung behind her with a wild pace, and shot up snow to hopefully hit the tom in the face with snow. Another laugh bubbled through. "How does that snow taste?" Cottoncloud inquired teasingly as she danced away in attempts to avoid any retaliation.

HEMLOCKBITE
- we're walking the wire, so look out down below -
"Yes, that's right," the young warrior purred in amusement. "And you're Cottoncloud, the new recruit. I hope CreekClan is treating you well. Though, I must admit you arrived at a less than persuasive time. Leaf-bare is tough on all the the Clans." He flocked his gaze over to the fresh kill pile and his newly added contribute. Even with it, more would need to be brought to feed everyone. "I think you'll find greenleaf to be much more inviting," he added with a smile. His mind wandered to the water and he wondered if the former kittypet had ever been for a swim. Now that was an outing he had to make sure he got in on.

He watched as Cottoncloud attempted to copy his movements. He had to give her props for her effort. She was trying and that was enough to convince Hemlockbite that she truly wanted out of her kittypet ways. Perhaps she could grow into the clan life afterall. There was always doubt when outsiders came in. Even though it was much more accepted these days for loners, rogues and even kitttpets to join the ranks of the Clans, it would always be the way of a Clan cat to be a little untrusting or skeptical. Everyone was fiercely protective of each other here and have known each other all their lives, building trust through each day. When you come in without that built in trust, it takes time to earn. And if Hemlockbite had an opinion on it, that was the way it should be.

None of that, of course, would keep him from being respectful and courteous to the new additions. What better way to build trust than to build relationship?

The large tom dropped to his paws with a thud and looked over at Cottoncloud, who had also stopped trying to capture snow in her jaws. Barely having time to process her question, he opened his mouth to counter as he was blasted directly in the face with the bitter cold, frozen water he once claimed to love. He stumbled back in surprise, shaking the snow from its target as so he could see again. Then, in an act of speechless mock horror, he gaped at the she-cat unbelievingly.

He wasted no time sprinting after her as she giggled. "You'll pay for that, you know!" He knew with his many moons of clan life and training he could catch up her almost instantly. But this was not training and it was not a true Chase. He eased up in fun, taking the extra time he had to fling snow her way, in Hope's that one or more of his shots would hit its target. He hadn't had this much fun in days and he found himself happy he had approached Cottoncloud this day. Chasing her through the camp, both of them laughing, was a good way to spend any day.
