spare us the gossip

to find the white forest was easy for the young tom. he had been a renown hunter by the time he was eight moons old, a fighter - less could be say on that. for the young tom, as he padded through the territory - advised by his uncle to go ahead so he could observe him in the territory - was surprised to find himself at ease and peace with his own personal time. while usually hidden beneath his mother's paws, sunpaw found he was enjoying the crisp age of 12 moons, knowing his time to become a warrior was nearing.

little did he know he needed a bit more work in areas that he absolutely detested. i can't believe he wants to train me to fight! why can't he teach me to be a peace treaty? the young tom asked with a huff as he scuffed a paw against a rock before him. with a sigh internally, the orange tom moved forward once more - not sure if his uncle and mentor was watching him truly. he could almost recall how he had been chewed out not that long ago for interrupting his uncle's private moment with his deputy.

'what he sees in the granddaughter of the crazy harestar... maybe uncle spirit is going insane.' the younger tom thought as he leap over a fallen tree at the edge of the forest, a location he was told to wait at for spiritstar to catch up. sitting on the log, the tom perked his ears and listen intently for his mentor's footsteps or black and white pelt. green eyes flickering across the moors, he finally spotted a hint of what he assumed to be his mentor in the distant. with a grin, the tom leap to his paws and meowed loudly for his mentor to come to him.

"uncle spiritstar!"

SPIRITSTAR
Now matter how difficult times insisted on getting, Spiritstar refused to let it get him down. At least...not publicly. His clan deserved better than Harestar gave him, and he was not about to repeat her mistakes by moping about and bowing to whatever problems came their way. To face the trials to come, his clan needed a strong leader, and until they had more information...letting the clan know what was going on would only cause a panic.

So, the tom held his head high and his fur flat as he strolled through his territory toward the White Forest. At first he had been watching his apprentice, though eventually he had veered to take his own path, not bothering to walk with his usual silent stealth or hide his raven fur among the silvery trunks and sprinkled snow in the hopes Sunpaw would spot him and decide to work on his ambush skills.

Unfortunately, he knew it was unlikely, so the call of his apprentice was hardly a surprise.

Still, Spiritstar offered an amused chuckle, and closed the remaining gap between them at an easy lope. "And here I was hoping for an ambush from my prized pupil," the tom chuckled calmly as he slowed to a walk and paused at the base of a tree. "You sure won't be winning on stealth if you alert the whole clan on your position."

Despite his words, there was no judgment or anger to the tom's tone as he looked upon his nephew fondly. Despite his distaste toward fighting - something Spiritstar could hardly blame him for with the war having ended when he was just a kit, and being raised by loving parents like Cherrybloom and Fogsplash - he was certainly on his way to being a great warrior.

However, even Spiritstar could not deny that today was not yet the day.

Despite his easy tone, the tom did need to take on a slightly more serious approach to this training session, and he knew the young tom would need some encouragement as well to get him fully on board with his training. Spiritstar already knew that most cats would put more effort into something they were motivated to accomplish - it just made sense. He did not want to set his own nephew behind on his impending ceremony because he would not learn to fight like a warrior.

"Now Sunpaw," Spiritstar said as he sat himself down, flicking easily over a root beside him, a little too restless to simply curl neatly over his paws. He ignored it, gaze trained steadily on his nephew. "Do you know why you need to learn to fight?"

sunpaw

he settled before his mentor with an ease that he had not realized he possessed. perhaps it came with the entitlement of being called the leader's nephew. however when he was mention to be no winning stealth machine, the younger tom rolled his eyes and pouted playfully. "perhaps, but at least they'll know someone is here!" he countered back playfully, smiling up at his mentor now with excitement. the tom himself enjoyed the playful nature of the world - and the non-violent side at that.

being born in the middle of peace was bound to do that to you. however as his mentor seemed to become more serious, the younger feline sobered up, eyes staring at the older warrior with a hint of worry and panic. please not this again. he thought as he stood rigid and annoyed. but his mentor uttered the word fight and the tom sighed internally. he knew why he had to fight, why they had to learn, but the tom was not about the fighting lifestyle. with squared shoulders the tom nodded with an annoyed sober expression.

"so we can defend the clan with our claws and not our words. because violence seems to be the answer to all things clan related." he meowed, looking off into the direction of where the twolegs lived - beyond the forest - before turning back to spiritstar. the tom stood up and nodded to his mentor letting him know that he was ready. "i.. i guess we just get this over with." he meowed quietly, looking thoroughly displeased with the whole notion of fighting and violence.

SPIRITSTAR
His nephew's annoyance was palpable, and Spiritstar could not help but narrow his eyes slightly at it, tail flicking briefly at the apparent belief Sunpaw held. That sounded like something Heronflight would say, if with far more enthusiasm and belief toward the words. It wound a certain tension through the raven leader that forced him to recenter himself to still it, expression softening again as he shook his head.

He could not be disappointed with his nephew, only with his own teachings. How had he let him believe that for so long? Perhaps because it was easier to keep the lighter nature when they just nearly avoided the issue as a whole. This was the first time Spiritstar had truly confronted it, and it made his stomach curl slightly.

As the apprentice stood, Spiritstar gestured for him to sit again.

"Before we can truly begin, Sunpaw, I think we need to look from a new perspective," Spiritstar mused, blinking at his nephew warmly with a softened curl of his maw to show that he was not upset with him. With his chin, the tom gestured toward the twolegplace Sunpaw's gaze had strayed to. "Life in the wild is not meant to be easy - by choosing to live this life, beyond the ease and comfort of what kittypet's know, we in turn must be a little tougher than most," he began, gaze drifting back to his apprentice.

"It is not so much a love of violence, but a necessity for survival that drives us. When we hunt, we use out claws, just as we do when we defend ourselves from a fox or a badger. The mark of a good warrior is not one who fights because he enjoys to fight, but because he is willing to put his clan before himself, to protect his kin from any danger they may face." Tail flicking again behind him, Spiritstar offered a slight tilt of his head, a question forming in his eyes as well as upon his words. "Every cat who has completed their warrior training within this clan knows how to fight, including myself and your parents - yet can you picture any of us rushing into unnecessary battle? Yes, we clans may fight at times, but we aim to avoid it where we can, saving our claws for a protective and necessary resort when words are no longer working, or do not stand as an option."

Standing now, Spiritstar paced a few steps away from the apprentice, and dug his claws into the earth, gaze peering out toward the location he so strongly remembered saw the death of his beloved sister and blinding of Cherrybloom - the place he finally took his father's life. His gaze refused to flicker down to his paws, almost imagining their blood upon them.

"A warrior's duty is not to be violent or cruel, but to serve and defend their clan with loyalty and honor," he said firmly, a strong certainty to his words that left no room for doubt. "To spill blood without reason is a sin - to kill when death can be avoided would make us rogues, not warriors."

Finally tearing his gaze from the moor, Spiritstar turned back to his apprentice and softened his expression. "We may have fallen upon hard times, but our past does not define who we are. We do not learn to fight for the sake of violence...do you understand, Sunpaw?" By now the leader's tone was colored with nothing but patience, and to show he was ready to help his apprentice understand, Spiritstar sat down once again and curled his tail across his paws.

sunpaw

he took note of his mentor and uncles narrowing eyes and his tail dropped. his maw slacked as he meowed more of a getting it over with. however for the young spit-fire of an apprentice, or rather, passionate about anything non-violence related, he stood read. with his uncle words on the aspect of fighting, of the life of a warrior. a part of sunpaw wanted to gag at the idea, but he listened, face sober and respectful towards his uncle, pale green eyes flicking from the toms face to the tom's ears and back again. a part of sunpaw wanted to remark that words would be better suited, would save lives, but he silenced himself as he waited for his mentor to finish.

"i understand spiritstar" he meowed, although there was a defiant look in his eye as he stood himself. he had watched his mentor turn and pace, had even wanted to reach out and tell his mentor that defending did not have to mean with their claws. words would need to be an option. but he had already made the point. ears flicking in annoyance the orange tom felt his own lips speak; "you speak truly uncle, about the warriors life verse what a kitty-pet lives. but it is not just words that are need to keep the peace. you can not simply take a cat for his word, if there is no honor, if there is no trust." his tail flicked annoyed.

"sure, one might find honor in defending their clan. but what honor is there if you injure another? what honor is there if your claws are responsible for the death of another? speaking and talking can do so much, but the other must learn to listen and if the other is never taught to listen..." he trailed off his rambles, looking annoyed at himself. the young tom did not believe in war, in fighting, he would rather be lashed down by the claws of another, if only he could at least speak to them and let them hear his words. squaring his shoulders he looked at his mentor and uncle for a moment before meowing.

"but i will take this session seriously uncle. i just do not believe in the way of claws... i rather let our voices be the last thing that is heard."

SPIRITSTAR
While Sunpaw said he understood, there was still defiance heavy in his gaze, in his voice, and Spiritstar knew he did not. Not entirely, at least. Still, Spiristar returned the favor of hearing his nephew out, for no matter where their beliefs might differ, he knew that that many young apprentices ceased to listen when they felt they were not heard. Besides, Sunpaw's words held truth to them as well, sung alongside Spiritstar's own belief, and the worry of becoming like his father through his own battle prowess.

As his nephew trailed off, Spiristar's gaze softened, somewhat rueful as he nodded in understanding. Again, his tail gestured the young tom to wait, as he once more urged the session onward. He was right, after all - talking was indeed important, especially when both parties were willing to listen. Yet when one was not... "You are right, Sunpaw - but sadly that is where our world ceases to be fair," Spiristar admitted.

"There is more honor in the willingness to listen and to reason than there is in acting with violence - in a perfect world, our lives would extend beyond gatherings in the ways of peace, and all disagreements would be settled with words, and not claws." The tom sighed softly, giving a slight shake of his head and blinking at his apprentice apologetically. "However, there is no such thing as a perfect world. There is merely this one - in which some are willing to talk, and others only wish to fight, refusing to learn and understand why violence should not be the answer. So, while we seek the peaceful routes where we can, to reason and understand - sometimes fighting is simply unavoidable. And if someone will not listen to reason and would prefer to take with claws then ask with words, then we must learn to defend ourselves and those we care about. For if we are willing to let those we love fall, then what would be the use in claiming to defend them at all?"

Tail flicking, the tom readied himself in a battle stance, claws sheathed and tail leveled for balance. "The most peaceful warriors can defend their clans against those blinded to reason with little bloodshed, even if they cannot avoid the fights other's insist upon," the tom offered, giving his apprentice a nod in gesture to begin. "Say I was a rogue that refused to back down without causing as much harm as possible no matter what words you offer, and that is always something you wish to avoid - I want you to try and subdue me without your claws. If you can do that, then you are defending your clan without bloodshed, and stopping the cause of more."
