WHILE MUCH IS UNKNOWN ABOUT THIS MYSTERY DISEASE, IT HAS CHOSEN TO GRACE YOU WITH ITS PRESENCE.

the darkness of night has overtaken the sun. and while many sleep soundly all curled in their nests, @coyotecall is roused by an odd scent filling his nose. the musty aroma consumes his senses, and as he begins to wake from his once peaceful sleep, his ears soon begin to build an odd pressure in them. soon his vision begins to blur, and a rush of warmth surges through his body. his veins fill with fire and not even the icy chill of leaf-bare air can soothe this scorching sensation. his eyes begin to cloud, vision slowly but surely failing. his brain will soon be consumed by the fever, and a seizure will overtake his body. he will fall unconscious, and take his last breath....

another life has been claimed.

slumber, peace, wonder. these were the thing that echoed in the mind of the fluffy grey and white tom. dreams of wonderful tasting prey, of lives well lived and of the daring of a nightly venture into the forest to climb once more with his leader. however, life seems to have come full circle, the young feline, curled tightly in his nest smells a scent that had only been described to him less then a few nights before by Fangstar.

his ears pull back as his eyes slowly open, the odd scent engulfing him in a sense of oddity. the musty smell is almost so strong he can taste it upon his lips, but as his eyes flutter to others around him he notices not another has stirred to the smell. what an odd experience, almost immediately he leaves his nest to get away from the smell, each step painstaking as his ears roar with a pressure that he had not experienced before in his young life. the feeling of blood rushing to them as he stumbles over the last feline in the warriors den into the clearing.

'the sky sure looks pretty...' he thinks as the pressure in his ears behinds to overwhelm his senses. eyes squishing tightly, he can feel a warmth spread through his body - the scent clinging to his mouth, throat and nose. he opens his eyes to seek the stars, only to find the twinkling ancestors blurred and watery as he stumbles forward, a breath gasping from him as the fire rushes through him instantly. he does not know when it happens, but he feels the sudden loss of strength in his forelegs as he lunges forward, the blurry vision turned towards the sky as he tries to gasp out a plea.

by the time the shakes begin, he is scared - fear rippling through him as his eyes turn towards the sky again - cloudy but still able to make out the light of the moon - as his mind slips into the heat of a fever, the cooling abyss takes him over as his shaking begins to slow, desperate gasps of air escape his lungs, but his body feels to weak - in the depths of his mind, he can hear the faint scream of what must be his sister as she calls his name. the tom, however, takes one last breath - wishing the fire and pain to leave his body, before his shaky and weak form collapse into a heap.

The price of  YOUR GREED,

your sons and your daughters
She awakes to a scream in the dead of the night. She jolts out of her nest, moss still clinging to her disheveled fur as she pelts out of her den, paws kicking up dirt where she flies across camp. The screaming has not yet stopped, perhaps if she runs faster, she can help - and so she does, almost colliding with the warrior's den in her haste to get there faster. "What is it? What's going on?" She snaps. Most, if not all, around her are awake but there is one who is left to lie. Coyotecall. She pushes past the crowd, teeth bared at anyone who gets in her way, until she comes to the still frame of the warrior.

The too-still frame of the warrior. Flickerfrost noses his body, claws unsheathed in her anguish. She's too late. What kind of medicine cat is she if she sleeps through another's demise? Even so close to his body, she can't figure out what ended his life. He was a good warrior, fit and with many moons left to live. To just be gone? Her throat dries against anything she could say. She bows her head - an apology, a farewell? - and backs out of the den, limbs heavy. He smelled wrong, yet she couldn't place how. Numbly, she sits outside of the den, staring blankly at the sky.

"The truth will set you free."
Fangstar bolted away from her brother the instant the screaming started, skidding down the rocks outside her den and to where a crowd of cats had already gathered. At least her worst fears of a raid in the middle of the night were abated. What happened? She watched as Flickerfrost backed away from the center of the cats but dismissed her for the moment. Her focus was set on what had gathered everyone's interest, heart already sinking as she noticed who the screaming was coming from.

The crowd seemed to part before her and gave her a clear view of the still body of Coyotecall. A strangled noise briefly left her - hidden underneath his sister's cries - and she had to force away her horror as mushrooms bloomed from the body. "Everyone back!" Her voice snapped out over Pumabarb as she began pushing cats away to create a large, clear area around the body. "Someone help her calm down."

Fangstar's gaze jerked over to where Flickerfrost still sat numbly outside the entrance of the den. Her voice hardened even more, trying to elicit the usual angry reaction to her presence that her medicine cat always had. "Get over here, Flickerfrost. Is it safe to move him or do we need something to cover him first?" Without waiting for an answer, she turned back to the rest of her Clan, calling out a few names to help move the body when something was decided. "I need everyone else to get back. Ferretmask, get them to group up under the ledge, they have to be out of the way."

She inwardly cursed herself, stepping carefully around Coyotecall's body to make sure the mushrooms weren't growing farther than his body. There hadn't yet been a clan meeting where she had told them about this mysterious new thing. It had been planned for the next day! Now... Now she had to take care of the body of one of her youngest warriors and figure out how she was going to explain everything to the rest of Gorgeclan.

FEATHERPAW
While it was a scream that had awoken her, it was her mentor's hurry that drove Featherpaw into action. Not letting her anxieties pause her movement, the apprentice hurried out of the medicine cave and rushed toward the commotion. Only to skid to a halt with wide eyes as she saw Flickerfrost looking more ruffled than she had ever seen her, Fangstar trying to drive the clan away from whatever they were huddled around, and heard Pumabarb's wails ringing in her ears like warning cries.

What could possibly be going on?

Resiting the urge to pin back her ears and simply flee, the apprentice slunk warily around the group and listened to what Fangstar was saying, the thrumming of her heart sounding almost loud enough in her ears to block out her leaders voice. Move him? Cover him? Who? And why was Flickerfrost all the way over there looking like all the herbs in their territory had turned to ash when there was seemingly a patient to attend to? Who was it?

Blocking out the cries of her clanmates that were telling the horrible truth to her, the apprentice crept froward until she could get better access to the body, for once no one even noticing her presence, until her eyes landed upon it, the faintest version of a familiar scent flooded her nose...and she gasped in fearful horror.

The slightest boost of her healer curiosity giving her the confidence to give one of the mushrooms a slight sniff was all Featherpaw managed, before she whipped around and bolted from the gathered cats with a cry of anguish. Without thinking she bundled herself most of the way to Flickerfrost before sinking to the ground, trembling, and staring around wide eyed as she sought out her brother in hopes of a little comfort.

"I-I know that scent, I know that sc-scent!" she started uttering, words falling out in a stuttering whimper as her gaze locked onto the body in horror. Faintly she was aware of a warmth pressing against her side, likely Wolfpaw trying to comfort her in some way like he often did. Gaze seeking out her mentor, the apprentice stared up at her fearfully. "W-will that happen to m-me too?"

Notes | I have decided that Featherpaw told NO ONE of her own Spore experience, so any information given by her in this thread will be the first ANYONE has heard of it - Ferret may link anything new she learns here to what she saw in their thread <3

Wolfpaw

Run run run away
Meet me in our hiding place
Find me where we'll make our escape

He was awakened by the scream. Oh, what a horrible sound.

Jolting awake in his mossy nest in the apprentice den, Wolfpaw dashed out into the main camp. The young tom's hackles were up, and his claws unsheathed when he saw the small group of cats huddled around a prone form.

Featherpaw!

His green eyes flashed when he caught sight of his sister. Hackles flattening as he pressed his large bulk into her side before turning his gaze to the still figure.

Coyotecall? Was he...?

Wolfpaw's attention was caught by the frantic questions of his littermate. What had happened? Draping his fluffy tail over the molly's back, he looked back over the tragic scene. Wolfpaw had never been too fond of Coyotecall, but wouldn't wish him dead.

He was no healer, but he could guess that the mushrooms accumulating on the body couldn't mean anything good. His brow furrowed.

"What-what happened?"

Come come come away
We don't need them anyway
Find me where we'll make our escape

The price of YOUR GREED,

your sons and your daughters
Flickerfrost caught Featherpaw from the corner of her eye, maw flapping uselessly in her attempts to tell her 'no, don't, come back!' to try and protect her apprentice, though nothing spilled from her mouth. It wasn't long after the Featherpaw returned, flinging herself away and Flickerfrost found herself meeting her, pressing a few hard and rapid licks to the top of her head before she had to think about it, backing away when Wolfpaw showed up. Faintly, she heard Fangstar yell at her from what seemed like a great distance away, but all Flickerfrost could hear was the mantra that leaked from Featherpaw. 'I know that scent!'

"
Featherpaw, what do you mean?" Her words were hissed softly, leaned down close to her apprentice but it seemed like it would be a bit before she would come to. "I won't let it, but I need to know what you mean so I can help!" At a loss, Flickerpaw growled lowly, rising and returning to where Coyotecall's body still lie, if not shifted slightly. Hopefully she'd be able to get answers from Featherpaw later. She took a deep breath, settling herself and returning herself to the mindset of GorgeClan's medicine cat.

"Don't touch him! We don't know if the disease transfers on contact or not. Everyone, out!" The hardness returned to her voice and what warriors around her that didn't move instantly met the fate of a headbutt to their rumps. "I've never seen this before. I don't know what to think. Mushrooms? We don't know if they're done growing yet but we need to tread carefully. We have to get him out without coming into much contact with the mushrooms, and then everything in here needs to be replaced." She scowled, pacing restlessly in the emptiness of the den as she thought. She looked up, meeting Fangstar's gaze and hoped Fangstar couldn't see the distress in her eyes. "If we get some big dock leaves, and maybe some thick branches, could we use the dock leaves to roll him onto the branches and drag him out? I really don't think touching him is going to be a good idea. I'm not sure if we should let him stay unburied for a vigil, either," she said, trailing off.

"The truth will set you free."
The appearance of Featherpaw didn't draw much attention from Fangstar until she too let out a cry. She couldn't quite hear the words of the medicine cat apprentice from where she was forcefully driving back Clan members who hadn't yet realized how serious she was about keeping them away. Thankfully, Featherpaw seemed to bring some life back into Flickerfrost, who came back over to the body and set to work.

Luckily, the few cats she had selected to help move him kept out of range as Flickerfrost set to headbutting the rest of the Clan away. Fangstar's mind raced even as Flickerfrost spoke. Perhaps some branches, as crude and potentially disrespectful such a thing was? They didn't know if it was contagious or not and it was better to be safe than... dead.

"Maybe not dock leaves for him, but definitely to wrap up the nests to dispose of them. Go get large branches we can use to move him with." The last she directed towards the waiting warriors before returning her attention to Flickerfrost. "No, we can't risk him being unburied. It will be a long journey, but we will bury him and everything else at the Crumbling Rocks. It will be off limits to the Clan from now until we figure this out." Fangstar hesitated but moved forward to touch the tip of her tail to Flickerfrost's shoulder. "You're in charge of getting him and the nests out of camp when the warriors return. I must tell the Clan what we had planned."

With a confidence she could barely hold onto, Fangstar approached the ledge she did Clan announcements from and hopped up. Even though most had quieted at her approach, she still yowled to call attention to herself. "Gorgeclan, as you can see we have an issue. It was brought up between the leaders and medicine cats at the last Gathering, an illness named that has appeared in all three clans. At first, it was just odd symptoms accompanied by a musty smell. We have not told you before because we assumed that was all the illness was. Now I see we were wrong, and one of the Clan has paid the price." Her voice stayed strong despite the sorrow that threatened to waver it. "We will be moving the body of Coyotecall to the Crumbling Rocks, along with everything in the den. Absolutely no one is allowed there until the source of this disease and its cure are found. Should you find yourself struck with dizziness, loss of a sense, or anything else out of the ordinary, bring yourself to Flickerfrost immediately. If you smell a musty scent - and I promise you will know what I mean should it happen to you - bring yourself to Flickerfrost immediately. This is not something to take lightly."

Her tone, hard during her speech, softened as she stared at the worried faces looking up at her. "We will get through this. Gorgeclan was not destroyed at the paws of Bonestar, we will not be taken out by an illness. Be strong and watch out for one another. For the night, please find a different place to sleep so that we may clean and clear without interference." Fangstar jumped back down from the ledge and moved towards Flickerfrost once more so that she could assist.

FEATHERPAW
While a barely audible 'I don't know' was stuttered out to her brother, as faintly, numbly aware of his presence in the moment as she was, Flickerfrost's question did not quite register in Featherpaw's mind as she stared hauntedly back at her, words struggling to make it even into her thoughts, much less past the block that was her leaden tongue.

Flickerfrost's next words, however, did reach her. Yet the apprentice hardly managed more than kneading her claws fearfully into the ground and staring back at her mentor in anguish before Flickerfrost turned away with a growl that saw Featherpaw flinching absently. Not that she feared her mentor in the slightest at that moment. Instead, the relief was not in her absence, but in the halt of prying questions as she sunk further into her brother's side, still trembling.

She knew questions still burned him, but Featherpaw could not even answer her own.

Vaguely, she registered the warriors being parted by the leader and medicine cat, Ferretmask undoubtedly doing damage control beyond her periphery, before Fangstar called the attention of the clan. Wolfpaw would get his answers now, yet Featherpaw barely angled her ears toward her leader, eyes still firmly glued, unseeing, upon the fallen body of a warrior they could not help.

The part of herself that was not cold, felt bitter and dark.

If he died on her behalf, because she knew that scent, then she knew she could not forgive that. She did not deserve life more than she did. Ask almost anyone in the clan, she deserved it less. The grandkit of Bonestar, daughter of his heretic kit Hailstrike. Just a weak, measly apprentice who could not even stand up for herself. She did not know the tom well, but surely he deserved his life more than her? No matter how ridiculous it likely was, one question haunted her mind like a plague as she stared blankly at the body. After the chill and scent went away, she thought she was fine. She did not avoid any of the clan more than she ever did, perhaps...

'Was this my fault?'

The price of YOUR GREED,

your sons and your daughters
Unless the warrior found sticks thick enough to forcibly move Coyotecall without snapping, they'd be forced to use dock leaves. She wasn't putting a single one of them in danger just to give Coyotecall the dignity of being moved with respect. She signed as Fangstar left but heeded his words nonetheless. Not that there was much she could do, waiting as she was. Distantly, she heard Fangstar call out to address the Clan and swiveled an ear to listen while she waited.

The leader suggested if there was anything wrong, almost anything at all, really, to report directedly to Flickerfrost. But what could she do? There was nothing that could have stopped Cotoyecall's death, that she could tell. And she suspected she'd get a lot of whiny warriors coming in with false symptoms that only thought were happening to them. The mind was a dangerous thing. She also suspected that some warriors would chose to sleep in the medicine den as well to really be safe. And as it were, Flickerfrost was not a fan of that. She sighed heavily, out loud, catching the eye of the warriors that returned with supplies.

She directed them to align the biggest of the sticks in a way that would allow them to drag Coyotecall out without touching the warrior. The hardest part, as she had known, was getting him on the sticks. Fangstar's words rang in her head and she rolled her eyes, snatching one of the dock leaves from a warrior and gesturing him to do the same as her. She summoned another warrior's help when it wasn't quite working and with the three of them, they managed to push Coyotecall up and onto the bed of dock leaves and sticks. Now they just needed to get him out. She was still plotting when Fangstar strolled back in and she nodded towards Coyotecall's still body. "It's done."
