Not too far from MoorClan camp lay the Lavender Fields. It was a peaceful place, and despite the evening chill, Skywhisper ventured out to restock his supplies. He normally did not wander too far without his apprentice or at least a warrior companion. In the case of dangerous animals or intruding enemies, he would put up little resistance. However, today he needed to get away. Tallstep and Mistfeather's deaths remained heavy on his mind and he could not shake the feeling of darkness. [break][break]

The Lavender Fields were like a place of light. Lavender, as well as flowers of many other types, opened their petals to the evening sun. He sighed. Peace seemed so fragile. He was looking around for some chickweed, maybe even some heather flowers. Anything that might lessen the symptoms of the Spore. It was a bit of a pain to search here, considering the sea of colorful plants, but it was well worth the while. [break][break]

In the corner of his eye, he spotted the color black. Now, that was not the color of a usual flower. He stopped, recognizing the shape of his Clan leader, Spiritstar. Skywhisper had not spoken to his leader for a while, as he had been busy with illnesses. Colds and coughs were rampant right now, and with the new disease on the rise, he could not afford too much time to chitchat. But perhaps these were things his Clan leader needed to know. He waded his way through the tall grass and flowers, leaving his current bundle of herbs in a safe place. [break][break]

Skywhisper and Harestar had chatted far more often. Skywhisper had mourned Harestar's death greatly, perhaps even more than that of his own mother. His relationship with his new leader had not nearly been as warm, but perhaps today StarClan would change that. He knew this was an opportune moment for the two of them to touch base among their busy and time-consuming duties. Skywhisper himself needed to share the burden of the Clan's recent losses. Hesitantly, he approached the black tom, making his presence clear.[break][break]

"Spiritstar," he greeted simply, shaking the grasses and petals out of his fur. "Evening." [break][break]

SPIRITSTAR
To wander the Lavender Fields so absently was not a common pastime of Spiritstar's. However, it seemed that evening would become an exception, seemingly taking upon Applecloud's apparent habit of seeking the soothing essence of the fields. Not that it was achieving as much as he would like. No matter how lovely a scent that perfumed the air, a smell alone was not something that could distill concerns of the strange new illness that had snagged two lives from beneath his paws so far, nor the reminders it gave of others he had failed to protect, a chilling echo of the nightmares he suffered each night.

Sighing heavily, the tom settled down among the sea of flowers.

The blooms had already began to die away, and the scent would soon fade with it. However, it would never die away completely, just as he was determined that no clan ever would. If Creekclan could even somehow survive their scattering and come back stronger...Moorclan could make it through this illness. Whatever it was.

They just needed more information.

As though summoned by his thoughts, the sound of movement drew the raven tom's attention toward his often silent medicine cat. The younger tom seemed almost hesitant in his approach, and Spiritstar found himself recalling that the two had not really spent as much time together as they ought have. The times had not been easy for them lately, and Skywhisper's job was certainly far from one to allow free time. Not to mention Spiritstar's own busy schedule - idle chatter was simply not something that occurred.

Rising from his stomach to sit among the lavender stalks, the leader gestured with his head for Skywhisper to join him, though did not push the offer to insistence. Unlike himself, the medicine cat was far less social, and this was not something that had slipped Spiritstar's awareness.

"It is indeed," the leader purred by way of greeting, dipping his head warmly in turn. However, a slight wariness still edged into his tone as he eyed the healer, allowing a rare flicker of concern to enter his gaze. No matter his usual reticent habits, the medicine cat looked to have a heavier weight upon his shoulders that evening. Naturally, the leader suspected his thoughts had trailed along the same tune as his own - however, he would leave that up to the healer to confer.

"Not a good one though, I take it?" Offering a chance for the Bengal to speak his mind, though not forcing it, the tom flicked an ear toward the snowy tom and awaited a response with sympathy and the slightest edge of worrying inching into his expression.

He had a feeling he knew where this discussion would lead, seeing as who he spoke to.

The tom-cat gave a sigh and maintained a respectful distance away from Spiritstar. He was not too sure what it was that brought the leader to the Lavender Fields today. Was there something he was interrupting? Somewhere deep inside, Skywhisper was still afraid of breaking the calm. The delicate tom feared chaos, like in the time of Bonestar. He was not sure how the newer leader would take bad news. [break][break]

"Cherrybloom," he meowed simply and gave a simple, worried shake of his head. She had fallen ill shortly prior. Cherrybloom was another cat he was close to. Since the day she went blind, she had been one of his most treasured and successful patients. Skywhisper could not bear the thought of losing her. Resilient she was, but Skywhisper was not willing to overlook this disease anymore. Mistfeather had first thought of it as a cough, or maybe a fever, and put off treatment. [break][break]

But Skywhisper had seen too many colds and fevers. He had known from the very start this was not so simple. For the majority of his career, he remained a successful medicine cat. His treatments were effective, and his Clan trusted his care. Skywhisper had often thought that once a sick cat arrived at his den, given adequate supplies and attention, they would be okay. Today was different. [break][break]

"I've not what to do besides hope," he admitted softly. Aside from the day he knew Orchidpaw was to be his apprentice, StarClan had been ever so silent. Skywhisper wanted to believe that when it came to StarClan, no news was good news. But remembering the grotesque fate of Mistfeather and Tallstep, it was hard to believe that StarClan could overlook such a dreadful fate. Perhaps it was a foreboding omen? [break][break]

"You've been well?" Skywhisper turned his icy eyes to Spiritstar. It might have sounded like an out-of-place question, but he did hope that the Clan leader would not fall victim to whatever this disease was. This was a topic of great privacy, and it was up to Spiritstar to decide who would be involved and how order would be maintained. Despite Orchidpaw's nagging, Skywhisper had not yet told his apprentice about the Spore, fearing it would terrify her. He had not explained Tallstep and Mistfeather's deaths to the rest of the Clan either. He could not in fear of panic and paranoia. [break][break]

SPIRITSTAR
Sympathy and concern edged into fullblown worry at the singular spoken name, just the sound of it on his healer's tongue enough to falter his resolve a little and see his eyes blow wide. Already he looked like he was considering haring it right back to camp without a moment more of hesitation, yet he stalled himself, and took a breath to calm his nerves.

The healer would not approach the matter like this if she was looking bad again.

"She said she was feeling better..." he responded, flicking an ear as he glanced uncertainly back toward camp. "Do you think she might get bad again?" Sure, it was not some deadly cough or flowing blood, yet the thought of his beloved, blind sister, losing her hearing as well? It must have been terrifying for her. The thought of it chilled even him, and the tom's claws dug into the earth to ground himself.

The healer's next words hit like a blow, yet Spiritstar refused to flinch at it. He had been expecting such. He had hoped it was nothing serious...yet the strange symptom, the smell she had described to him...it was far too much to just ignore. Few knew of The Spore, beyond Skywhisper, Applecloud and himself. Cherrybloom was the only other one who had any idea, for the leader could never keep such things from his dear sister. She knew him too well, and despite he lack of sight, was simply aware of too much to miss it. Everyone else, therefore, thought that this brief lapse was nothing to fear.

Spiritstar, however, knew better. He hated the helpless feeling that he could do nothing.

Just another failure in protecting her, and they had no idea if it was gone just like that, or it would come back worse than before. It had taken hold of her now, however briefly, and the thought of losing his sister to something he could not even attempt to stop...well it had him near wanting to beg to Starclan for a cure, even if he had to lose one of his own damn lives to get them to speak with him.

He refused to lose anyone else he loved.

Skywhisper's next question almost felt like a mockery. However, the tom suppressed his bitter laugh and instead gave a curt nod, before sitting down with a sigh, tail curling beside his flank. He knew well enough the meaning behind the question - after all, it was not long ago Applecloud had been fussing over the same thing. "I am fine," he assured, though there was little relief to his words. "Though I wish I could have taken the sickness for her...she's already lost too much."

Ears flattening back, the tom glanced in a different direction, this time not toward camp nor toward his companion. While no one else knew, the handling of Mistfeather and Tallstep and been taken with great caution, and the thought of such a terrible and unknown disease spreading to the rest of the clan had seen Spiritstar insisting quietly to his fellow high ranks that the bodies be buried well away from the camp and beyond clan borders where cats would rarely visit, and another location set for cats to hold vigil just to be safe.

He had felt such guilt doing so...but to see such suffering again...it was what he had to do for the safety of his clan.

Now he was questioning if it had even been enough. Maybe it was just impossible to stop it now, but he would make the same decision over and over no matter how much it would hurt to do so, and if his sister fell to it...with great pain and grief he would make the same choice with her. She would want him to, just as the others would have. Too little was known about the disease.

"I knew it was not just some ordinary sickness..." he murmured softly, doubt heavy on his tone as his gaze remained directed toward the burial site, to give away the words he would not quite say aloud. "It has returned...hasn't it?"

For all the power and knowledge that a medicine cat held, sometimes even that was not enough. There were simply things in nature, Skywhisper thought, that were beyond any cat's control. Cherrybloom was currently in his den; he had told her to stay there despite her claim that she felt better. His lack of knowledge surrounding the disease made him wary. What if she carried it to other cats? How had she been infected in the first place? [break][break]

He gave Spiritstar's shoulder a light comforting tap with his tail and mustered up some confidence. "I know she's special to you. I'll do everything I can, and always have." [break][break]

Based on the prior two cases, Cherrybloom's prognosis did not seem hopeful. However, he refused to believe that the disease was a death sentence. He dared not speak more of it in fear of sparking more worry from Spiritstar prematurely. He would wait and see. Cherrybloom was a strong cat, he would bet his prey on her getting better.[break][break]

He caught Spiritstar's gaze toward the edge of the campus, and in the air of concern, also felt a pang of guilt himself. He himself had also thought about it and come to no answer. Skywhisper too, felt immense discomfort for the disrespect of his two Clanmate's bodies.

"I am unsure if it spreads," he replied, hoping to sooth the Clan leader's concerns. However, there was little soothing about the topic. "Theoretically you or I would have had the most exposure."[break][break]

That, in itself, was a fearful thought. It was also a risk that Skyfeather knew to be true. The body of medicine cats were not any more immune or powerful in the face of disease. He had been the one to secretly take Mistfeather's body to the outskirts, beyond Clan territory. He had been the one who was there in her last moments, her acrid breath close to his own. The same went for Tallstep. He had even carefully observed the mushrooms sprouting from the corpse. They were unlike anything he had seen before. But if this was anything like greencough, surely he would be a likely next victim? The thought gave him chills.[break][break]

"I have not told Orchidpaw," he began at the thought of his successor.[break][break]

Skywhisper gave a small shrug and a shake of his head. If anything, that made the situation all the more worrying. However, he was quite sure of his choice to not tell her. Her loud and mouth and aggressive personality made for panic in the Clan. He often worried about her fiery mannerisms as a future medicine cat in the Clan. He looked to Spiritstar, wondering if the Clan leader would disagree or agree with his choice.

SPIRITSTAR
While the attempt at comfort did not really accomplish what it intended, the leader's thoughts still swirling out of control, Spiritstar still gave him a grateful nod, eyes closing briefly in a warmer blink toward the tom. "I know - you are a great medicine cat, Skywhisper."

At the tom's words, Spiritstar flicked his ears in acknowledgement, before nodding thoughtfully, a frown slightly creasing his normally calm and playful facade. "I do not think it spreads from cat to cat," he decided, though he was not about to bet upon it. Still, he and Skywhisper were bound to have been infected now if it did...Robinflight too. "However those mushrooms...I could not trust it not to spread from those. Perhaps we should keep an eye out for similar ones in our territory?"

In truth he had no certain thoughts on this.

There had to be some type of cause, nothing this bad could come out of nowhere, and it was surely not something they had carried with them before because this was the first anyone had heard of it. Yet then again...with all that had happened, so many outsiders had joined the clans. Perhaps someone had brought it in from elsewhere? Forbidding outsiders joining would be pointless now, however. It was already here, there was no way to stop it.

Hopefully it would not turn into some epidemic, though the leader had his doubts.

The mention of Orchidpaw and the slight shake of the healer's head earned a pause from Spiritstar, before he gave a slight nod of approval. In truth, he did not believe the young molly ready for this, and they could not risk at this point in time the rest of the clan knowing more about the disease - there was so little, and everyone would panic to be faced with something that had no cause, no cure, and no clear way to avoid it from spreading. It was a total mystery, and those were the worst things to face his clan with. How could they have faith in them with such a lack of knowledge? To see his clan give up in the face of this would be his worst failure yet.

"Good," he offered after a moment, eyes carrying back toward the medicine cat. "She is too young and inexperienced for now - the only thing she would get out of knowing is panic, or causing more should she decide to tell anyone else." He figured the apprentice would not like to be kept in the dark...yet Spiritstar figured it was for the best.

"When she has more experience, or if it becomes necessary, we will tell her then. Just make sure to keep me and Applecloud updated on everything that we learn about it so that she will know everything we do when she needs the information." Here was to hoping that Skywhisper would well outlive the disease, and Orchidpaw would never need to face dealing with it alone.

Spiritstar was still not certain yet if she was entirely fit for her role.

Skywhisper might be fairly quiet in the day to day, but when it came to plants and herbs, he could not help but nerd. Perhaps it was just that he knew far too much to keep silent. Or, perhaps it was his slightly more creative side sticking through.[break][break]

"Nettle stings, hemlock suffocates, and others like foxglove, can even kill,"
he began, recalling many of the precautions Snowberry had taught him about plants and fungi. He had used them, even, during Bonestar's days when cats would come back so mangled and injured Skywhisper could only put them out of their misery. He had seen them used in many underhand plots as well, and thus he kept knowledge of where these harmful plants grew to his own knowledge. "Poisonous mushrooms are not all that unfamiliar. We should keep a look out... but if the origin existed on our territory it's unlikely I have not come across it." [break][break]

He paused, thinking about how many times he dug through the niches and corners of the territory each moon, looking for rarer herbs and keeping stock of what was growing. Could something so potent have escaped his knowledge? After Mistfeather's death, he had indeed observed the mushrooms carefully, plucking their stems apart to look for roots or poisons. Since then he had not encountered them anywhere else... [break][break]

"But not out of the question,"
he added ruefully. "It is more likely to have been carried by prey. Shortly prior to Cherrybloom's symptoms, Robinflight brought her a rabbit."

He stopped there, slightly embarrassed by his little nerdy outburst. He glanced at Spiritstar, hoping he had not overstepped his boundaries. Skywhisper and Harestar at times had even shared long stories and intriguing adventures. But Spiritstar was still rather unfamiliar in comparison, and Skywhisper had a hard time gauging the black tom's true opinion of him. [break][break]

Fortunately, he did not disagree with Skywhisper's wariness of Orchidpaw.

"I chose her for her intelligence," Skywhisper breathed at the mention of his feisty apprentice. He had many, many doubts about her. Unfortunately the increasing load of medicine cat tasks, along with StarClan's voice, convinced him it was the right decision. He could feel that he had chosen well, but she would need a lot of time. "But intelligence is only a small part of medicine." [break][break]

He, too, needed to train her and understand her. After all, they portrayed very different demeanors and personalities. He nodded at Spiritstar's words. Until it truly became an epidemic, there was no need to cause panic. [break][break]

SPIRITSTAR
Truly, Spiritstar trusted Skywhisper to have been well onto the matter, to have studied as well as he could and have kept a careful eye out. After all, the leader knew well his medicine cat was far from unfamiliar with poisons - even as a deputy, and a warrior before that, he had given much attention to what was going on within his clan, as well as beyond their borders where he could spare the attention. He did not doubt the healer had been vigilant in his duty.

However, they could leave nothing to chance.

The news of the rabbit, however, saw a grave look fall heavier upon the leader as he sighed, eyes narrowing slightly upon the ground, his own paws that had brought his sister a rabbit just a day prior. "Unfortunately we can't just avoid prey..." Spiritstar sighed. "Was there anything off about the rabbit? A strange scent perhaps? It could be possible that the prey might be carrying something from beyond our borders."

Flicking his tail, a slight sign of his anxiety that was struggling to remain compressed, the tom put a bit more thought into actions they could take. "I think we need to start inspecting food and water sources more regularly, perhaps a more thorough examination of our territory...and if things keep up like this we may need to turn attention beyond our borders." Whiskers twitching, the tom cats his attention toward the Blessed Stumps. "Perhaps you could warn the other medicine cats at the gathering to keep an eye out for any strange mushrooms or out of place scents in their territory?"

How far did they want to involve the other medicine cats in this matter? His worry remained that anything the healers were told, they may well report back to their leaders. At least Flickerfrost gave of a less than fond vibe toward her own leader, so perhaps Gorgeclan was less of a worry in that matter...Yet was Creekclan a threat, or an ally?

In truth, he could not tell. Perhaps the coming gathering would help.
